There's worse things than that.

Every time you see an ad in the paper that says "FREE! cat/dog/rabbit/whatever" you can bet a picker will attempt to get to the animal first.

Un-neutered purebreds will go either to breeding or laboratories and mutts and fixed dogs to pit trainers.

Small animals like rabbits, kittens, puppies or guinea pigs will most likely be eaten by snakes.

It breaks my heart to see people advertising their pets for "free".
They should always charge at least a little more than pit trainers or laboratories are willing to pay.
