I do not believe a career SF operator

He was wearing a "patch" - could be an SSI from 5th or 7th Group, or it could be the SF tab. Dunno. Agree with your sentiment, but there is no verification this guy claimed to be bonafide SF.

Further, I don't believe SF units have the position of 1SG, an E8 would be a MSG in an SF Det.

Finally, I too cannot imagine an active duty FIRST SERGEANT - by definition a selected leader - would be at a shlockfest like this talking smack about the President.

Tats are grandfathered, if you had them prior to the change (mid 80s IIRC) you can keep them.

The "loco" tat is a bit much and I doubt any Commander would pick a guy with a tat like that to be his 1SG, but you never know.

No way is this guy an active duty 1SG. Certainly someone got a picture of this guy.....

I am a Special Forces Veteran of the Vietnam War. I am in contact with thousands of Special Forces Veterans past and present. So far I have not been able to find even one person from Special Forces that has ever heard of Frank Cookinham. I have been trying.

I doubt if there is even a dozen 1st Sgts serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan at any one time. Special Forces is a small tight knit community and finding somebody that knows somebody else is not hard. Nobody has come forward saying that they know him or have heard of him.
