CA: Governor seeks help to finish what he started
Sacramento Bee ^ | September 25, 2005 | Arnold Schwarzenegger

Posted on 09/26/2005 1:24:26 PM PDT by calcowgirl

Elementary schools start with the fundamentals, the building blocks, the three R's: reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic. The California Comeback starts with its fundamentals, its building blocks, too. They are a different three R's: recovery, reform, rebuild.

When I took office 22 months ago, I had no illusions about how difficult the job would be, no illusions about what it would take to turn around a state $22 billion in debt. But in that time, we have accomplished the first R - recovery. We saved the state from bankruptcy, increasing state revenues $6 billion without raising taxes. We rolled back the unfair car tax increase, reduced workers' compensation insurance premiums 30 percent, created a positive business environment and brought huge numbers of jobs back to the state - more than 400,000.

You put your full faith and trust in me when you sent me to Sacramento to fix a broken political system. I was - and remain - determined to reach your goal. I knew there would be challenges, but I believed I could get Democrats and Republicans to work together. Initially, we did. We got a lot done, and we did it quickly.

I am proud of the economic recovery, just as I am proud of our other accomplishments: supporting stem cell research, victims' rights, the three-strikes law and environmental initiatives such as the hydrogen highway. I'm proud I set aside more land for public parks than any governor in California's history.

I also know that while meeting those challenges, I made some mistakes and learned many vital lessons along the way that make me a better governor.

I've learned that it is a good idea as governor to listen more and talk less, especially lines best left for "Saturday Night Live." ...

This kind of crap has been pulled by courts, but there is no way that the governor could raise taxes.

Well that is your opinion. Instead of stating it as such early on, you instead inferred I was a liar for posting something published in an OC Register news article. I take note of the absence of an apology.

BRAVO, SW. Excellent post. My favorite:
I am NOT pursuaded to except the attempt at a self-fulfilling prophecy that we conservatives should all lie back and try to enjoy the incrementalism you insist must take place. That is self-limiting timidity and will achieve nothing, either short-term, or long-term!
BTW, I notice the GOP is already rolling over on Socialized Medicine, actively promoting Prop 78.

My, my, Sierra. You're in rare form tonight. Pardon me if I don't jump into an "incrementalism" debate. 1. I'm not the pile-on type. 2. I reject the thesis.

I take my wins where I get them.

However, I am not in any way affiliated with any organization.

Too bad. I know a good one.

BTW, you lived in the Bay Area then moved to Davis? And you want us to believe you are conservative? Not possible!

Ummm, OK. I take it you don't want me on your side?

Beware, I'm very sarcastic. I actually was inviting you to get to know my organization.

"I take my wins where I get them."

I understand. Most pragmatists do take the path of least resistance, venturing little and gaining even less!

I challenge you to do more to return the Grand Old Party in CA to the platform it had before the current so-called "leadership" elbowed most of the dedicated grassroots hardworkers out of the organization, sacrificing those well stated principles that had survived since Reagan. Just do it!!!

I want you, as a FReeper to strive for it, at least. Won't you??? You're in position to, as a delegate.

I have not given up on my idea of developing a lobbying group.

Well, Dan... You're prolly too young to remember, or may not have had the same overbearing fundamentalist religious up-bringing that I survived, but when they were designing and build the huge Apollo booster rocket, fundamentalist preachers were revising their fire and brimstone sermons to condemn the up coming moonlaunch as a "work of the Devil!"

Well, now! Based on that article and based on the fact that that one "graven image" started the new Pagan Religion of GovernMental EnvironMentalism... Those old preachers WERE RIGHT!!!

In their churches were pictures of Jesus holding the Earth in HIS hands... NOT an islolated, vulnerable "space ship earth" with a barely perceptable cushion of "firmament!" (atmosphere, of course)

The message of the contrast with the "dead" moon in the forground was the epitome of "good & evil," the "quick and the dead!" "The wages of sin are death," was quickly converted into "The SUPERFUND!!!" The high priests became the self-annointed little prigs that started calling themselves EnvironMentalists.

They alone would save us from ourselves, even if they had to infiltrate every level of our multi-level GovernMental bureaucrazy to do it!!!

So... In reality... the Luddites were right! We should have never let 'em even circle the moon even once on Christmas Eve and they should have never read from the bible! That just inspired the "Born Again Pagans" to institute an whole new union of church and state called GovernMental EnvironMentalism that we have today.

Today's GovernMental EnvironMentalism's only redeeming social value is that, just like government... the only thing it accomplishes is making everything COST MORE!!!

That creates inordinate inflation which is the cruelest tax of all. It creates arbitrary bureaucratic regulation which is what our founders rebelled against in the form of inexcusable confiscatory taxation along with governmental penetration into our very hearths and homes!!!

"Conversely a Democrat Governor could not."

And in that phrase lies the essence of the logic in why Carry_Okie has stated he voted the way he did in the Great Cauleeforneeah Recall Election HiJacking!!!

He's much braver than I! I wouldn't tell anybody because it's a secret ballot and I enjoy that protection!!!

Sierra, didn't your mother ever tell you that honey draws more flies?

Your issues- whatever they may be- are not necessarily mine.

I would really like to know what your issues actually are, so's I could see how much they contrast to mine. Besides, I was talking more broadly about conservative issues, rather than my personal issues.

"Beware, I'm very sarcastic."

You know I'm usually pretty good at picking up on that. After really diving into the fray the last couple of days, I'm a little gunshy. I'd be happy to look at anything you have to offer.
