Taliban commander said surrounded, 10 Taliban killed
By Sayed Salahuddin

U.S. and Afghan forces have surrounded a Taliban commander in a central province, an Afghan official said on Friday, after fighting in which the U.S. military said 10 insurgents and an Afghan soldier were killed.

Uruzgan governor Jan Mohammad Khan said Afghan and U.S. forces launched an operation on Thursday after learning that Mullah Dadullah, a top commander and member of the Taliban leadership council, was in the area. But a guerrilla spokesman denied Dadullah was in the area and spokesmen for the U.S. military and the Afghan Defence Ministry said they had no information he was there.

U.S. military spokesman Colonel Jim Yonts said 10 Taliban had been killed in fighting after insurgents ambushed a patrol. It was the bloodiest clash since Sunday's nationwide elections, which passed off largely peacefully. Khan said fighting was continuing. "We have information that Dadullah has come and is here," he said.

MNF arrests 80 suspects in northern Iraq

The Multi-National Force (MNF) on Sunday announced the arrest of more than 80 suspected terrorists and seized a number of weapons caches in northern Iraq.

An MNF press release said that the Iraqi and US forces seized four weapons caches, arrested 13 suspected terrorists, killed one terrorist, and wounded two others in several operations on Friday and Sunday.

It added that the Iraqi Police on Friday clashed with gunmen and wounded two of them in Mosul, noting that one of them managed to escape, while the other was transported to hospital.

It also said that the US forces on Sunday seized four weapons caches in a burst and search operation in Tal Afar, noting that the caches included detonators, shells, gas cylinders, mortar rounds, mines, grenades, machineguns, explosives, remote detonators, protection masks, various types of ammunitions, rocket-propelled grenades, rockets, and medical supplies.

The press release said that the MNF killed three insurgents and arrested 72 others since Wednesday in Tal Afar nearby the Syrian-Iraqi borders and in Mosul.

Lodi pair arraigned on new terror indictment
DON THOMPSON

A father and son from Lodi pleaded not guilty Friday to a new indictment that boosted the charges against the son, who is accused of attending an al-Qaida training camp in Pakistan.

The federal indictment handed down Thursday alleges that Hamid Hayat, 23, provided material support for carrying out international acts of terror between March 2003 and June 4, 2005, when he was arrested days after returning to the United States from Pakistan. U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott said that is the most serious charge that could be filed because there is no evidence Hayat participated in an actual terrorist act.

Hayat previously was held on twin counts of lying to authorities by first denying, then allegedly admitting that he attended the camp last year. He faces up to 31 years in prison if convicted of all three charges.

Hayat's father, Umer, 47, is charged with lying when he denied his son had attended such a camp. He was re-indicted Thursday along with his son, but no new charges were added.

Task Force Baghdad Soldiers Foil Roadside Bombers

By 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division PAO

A 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division Soldier observing a main road north of Baghdad foiled the efforts of two roadside bombers in the late night hours of Sept. 22.

Upon discovering two insurgents attempting to emplace an improvised explosive device, the Soldier immediately called for two M1A1 tanks from 1st Battalion, 13th Armored Regiment to engage the insurgents before they could trigger their device. When they arrived at the site, the tanks identified the two bombers and engaged them with machine guns.

The tank crews called in two AH-64 Apaches to their location to assist when the insurgents fled the area.

The bombs were destroyed by a military explosives ordnance disposal unit.

The coordinated effort of these Soldiers stopped the insurgents' attempts to trigger their improvised explosive device and prevented the injury of any Coalition Forces and Iraqi civilians in the area.

The cache included 11 improvised explosive devices, one sniper rifle, 18 Motorola telephones, one mortar tube, 14 60 mm mortar rounds, one artillery round, nine washing machine timers and an unspecified amount of TNT and C4 plastic explosives.

Six suspected terrorists were also detained as a result of the find.
