A senior German conservative argued Saturday that Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder must back off his claim to lead the government before the country's two biggest parties can embark on post-election coalition talks.
A "grand coalition" of Schroeder's Social Democrats and challenger Angela Merkel's conservative bloc is emerging as a likely solution to the impasse following last weekend's election. But both leaders insist they should be the next chancellor.
Merkel's Christian Democrats and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, emerged three seats ahead of the Social Democrats -- well short of a majority for her program of accelerated economic reforms.

Must have been coached by Al Gore.
Did Bill Clinton chime in yet?
Correct, he lost. By 0.9%.
Merkel should not accept the job under the current circumstances. She won't have the power to implement her agenda, but the voters will nevertheless blame her for any worsening of the situation, and also for failing to improve things (which the other lefty parties will make sure she won't be able to do.)
If that's the situation Schroeder wants to be in, let him have it.
My dear friends:
Carter helped plant the seeds of *Conservatism* in the US.
Schroeder can be that same gardener for Germany.
So, let him have power for another term.
Amen. From the day of election results, I have been urging this outcome.
Let Schroeder screw things up more!!
"Correct, he lost. By 0.9%."

Which is about 40,000 votes.
The loss may be a narrow loss, but you can't call a loss a WIN, which is what Schroeder wants to do.
Also correct.
Merkel is now duty-bound to try and form a government. If she fails, Schröder can then be asked to do so. Whatever, it will be a weak government. New elections might well bring a bigger vote for Schröder.
What's this nonsense? What's this got to do with the German election?
They are close friends.
Whew! I thought it was just me that didn't get Gay State's comment.
It has to do with Scroeder's obvious conviction that he rules, and should continue to rule,by Divine Right. This is consistent with the attitude of other well known office holders in recent times who share his political/social philosophy, including the likes of Stalin and Mao.
More nonsense! Schröder thinks he should rule because he can put together a coalition (how, I don't know) while Merkel can't. While this is a dodgy assumption, it's nothing to do with divine right or Stalin/Mao. Remember, more Germans voted for the left than the right. But Merkel should have the first shot (much good it'll do her).
BTW, are you a state conservative who's gay, or a conservative in a gay state?
The media, both here and abroad, have not made clear that Chancellor Schroeder, who is struggling to retain power, is a dedicated communist and the latest in a long line of socialist chancellors who have ruined Germany.
The battle between Schroeder and Merkel, the lady who won more votes than he did, is an attempt by voters to throw off the mess into which socialism inevitably leads.
Merkel might be able to patch together a coalition, if not she could lose even though she got more votes than Schroeder. Maybe Al Gore will rush to her side to console and advise her.
The great weakness of parlimantary government is that it can be ruled only by coalitions. Coalitions are shaky and last only until one of its members is offered a better deal by those out of power.
It's probably too late to save Germany from the consequences of so many years of socialism.
How can you believe in Divine Right if you don't believe in God?
Herr Schroeder must think that he is God.
People who believe they are God belong in a loony bin.
Being European,it might not be as funny to you as an American. The short explanation is:
All US states have an official (or semi-official)"nickname".My home state,Massachusetts,is nicknamed "The Bay State".Our state Supreme Court recently declared that homosexuals must be allowed to "marry".Since then, some jokingly (or derisively) refer to Mass. as "The Gay State".
Hey Schroder,
Get out of Merkel's house!
Get out of Merkel's house!
Get out of Merkel's house!
