Lufkin area Freeper finally checking in. My family and I are safe at my Mom and Dad's house. Our home is ok (roof line vent was blown off and barn roof has some damaged) but we are still without power. Mom and Dad's power was restored yesterday evening.

Lots of trees down and other wind damage around but compared to areas just south/southeast of here, we were spared!

Ok, just saw the part of the original post that said you'd love to hear our experiences.

I mainly want to touch on the recovery and relief aspect of things, based on calls I heard on the radio yesterday.

On the positive end, I heard a call from a man from Vidor, TX. He had been in MS, helping with Katrina recovery. He was on his way home, hauling a Bobcat, generators, chainsaws, fuel, water, etc. He gave his cell # and said that anyone who needed help could call because he was on his way. His call brought tears to my eyes!

Then there were calls from the other end of the spectrum. One local lady was almost frantic. She had no power and no ice and was complaining about the heat and the low water pressure and she wanted to know when help was coming. (Her home was undamaged.) Another lady was complaining about "all of the evacuees from Houston" snatching up all of the milk and bread from the grocery stores. She wanted to know how she was supposed to feed her kids.

This is ONE day after, folks. My husband and I could only shake our heads in disbelief. Even after Katrina, even after DAYS of being told by newscasters and weathermen on tv and radio to be prepared, these people did nothing to make sure they could take care of their families. It was truly nauseating.

Needless to say, it was a great relief to know that we were as prepared as well as we could possibly be. And after seeing how rapidly things can get nuts when the population of your town doubles (or triples!) in size overnight, we will be even more prepared in the future.

Lastly, it's disappointing, even if not unexpected, to see the MSM ignoring Rita's affect on my neighbors in the small Texas towns to the southeast.

I left Jasper at 1:30p.m. Thursday and got to Lufkin in normal driving time.

I can't go home for 4 or 5 weeks but somebody here is going over soon to see what the deal is. We know there is a pine tree on the roof and a pole and some transformers in our front yard. Two huge trees in our yard fell across the steet and they are blocking our driveway.

Was I in a hurry to leave? I left the keys in the deadbolt lock outside.
