Religious Lawmaker Wants To Ban Sports On Sundays

WHITE HOUSE, Tenn. -- Play ball! As long as it's not Sunday morning.

Alderman Darrel Leftwich is proposing that the city establish new Sunday hours for White House Municipal Park so sporting events could only be held in the afternoon.

"I am concerned that we are not sending the right message to the community by having tournaments and league play during worship hours," Leftwich said.

Leftwich said that he drove by the park Sunday morning on his way to services at Temple Baptist Church and saw that it was full of people at a soccer tournament.

"God our Father intended the seventh day to be one of rest and worship," Leftwich said during this week's city board meeting. He asked the city manager to draft an ordinance that would restrict Sunday hours at parks in the town, about 20 miles north of Nashville.

Alderman Farris Bibb Jr. said the city should go slow before enacting a change. "With all due respect to Alderman Leftwich, the seventh day of the week is Saturday," Bibb said.

Agreed, will never happen. The argument over "which" day is the 7th would take 20 years to settle anyway.LOL

While I'm hesitant to use the term Shep made famous in NO, it does look like we dodged the bullet on Rita. Did you get any appreciable rain?

Nothing but a little breeze here, bright and sunny right now.

Get that gen working yet? :o)

Just got off the phone with friend from Bosier City/Shreveport. He's cooking a pot roast, not concerned about the storm. Still has power, or had, we dropped phone connections twice and he hasn't called back after the second.

The generator lost it's priority when the storm turned. Did work on it long enough to concede tank work was not going to EVER succeed.LOL It will run on separate tank.

Also didn't help that son in law told me I could use his welder/generator if needed.

My rabbi says no sports on Saturday...what to do?

Pretending you're being serious here, you could either petitition your councilman or city hall, or just move to a majority Jewish community.

In New York, we've had "blue laws" that disallowed the sale of alcohol at a certain span of time on Sundays. It's nothing new and I'm sure our heavy Jewish population hasn't complained much.

ANY community can pass whatever law they wish with NO intereference from the federal govt.

If a community wants to ban sports on Sundays, then they can do so as long as they follow their own laws to pass the legislation.

Only socialists and worse would disagree.

For reals. Imagine how they'll feel when they realize we used to have official state religions.

I also think it is silly when people start saying "Well what if the local Zoroastrians want to ban sports on Tuesdays." At its purest level, this has always been a country ruled by the majority culture with respect and protection given to minority cultures. Meaning that you can't pass laws forcing anyone to recognize Jesus Christ as the Messiah, but you certainly can pass laws preventing child sacrifice, cliterectomies, and force Muslim women to remove their burkas for driver's license photos.

ANY community can pass whatever law they wish with NO intereference from the federal govt. Oh really? So if a community passes a law allowing for slavery and segregation, the Federal government should butt out, hm?

I seem to recall a certain civil war going down about 150 years ago over such issues. Last I saw, the side that claimed ultimate authority of State's Rights over Federal Rights...well...lost.

I personally think you should have played the Hitler/Holocaust card here. Would have been less dramatic.

However, the original post needs to be corrected. Outside certain protections granted by the Constitution, a city can pass just about any law it likes.

Ordinance means a local law that citizens must obey or face criminal charges. That's not a request, that's an attempt to force the private religious views of a full-of-himself posturing elitist on a bunch of kids playing soccer -- using the force of the law.

Hey dummy, that's how it works in this country. No one said you have to like his proposal. But if either a majority of the people or the majority of the city council or the chief executive of the municipality (or however this particular place's legislating works) agrees, then yeah, it becomes law. It's called majority rule.

And yeah, you have to follow that law under threat of punishment, though I am sure the "criminal charges" will be something along the lines of a fine or citation. It's called the Rule of Law.

And, there is nothing unconstitutional about it. Hell, up in the Northeast we still have "blue laws" regarding alcohol sale on Sundays.

Hey, in my city, no one is allowed in the public parks after midnight. They're considered trespassing after that point. Isn't that discrimination against all the vampires and goths in my city?

Get a grip. Idiot.

He who must resort to childish name-calling has conceded that the other party's argument is too strong for intelligent counter-argument. In other words, I have won the argument, and am right.

You have resorted to name-calling like a child who does not possess the intellect a clever repartee would require.

Hey dummy

Prefacing your comments with a childish and insulting phrase like this makes it clear that you are not to be taken seriously. Don't ever post a reply like that to me again unless you want to be reported for abuse. Either be respectful or go elsewhere.

What in the hell is the matter with you people this morning? I call for an ordinance banning irritable remarks on Sunday.

I know it's hard to read irony, sarcasm or nuance into posts, but that's what I meant. My point being that every religious group should not have sway over civil laws.

I'd like to amend that motion for all days ending in 'Y'. All in favor?
