This is from the Stratfor premium service, so I can't link to it or post from it. However, it looks like a number of the German Left party were former member of the East German Stasi. This will be a big scandal, and should wipe the German Left party out of the upcoming elections for the lower house. This should change things in the big kerfuffle over how or if to make a new government.

Das ist eine Schande.../sarcasm
I had read a story elsewhere that the Left Party might vote to keep Schroeder in power... even if Schroeder won't cut a deal with them and put them in the Cabinet.
And people thought the Sponsorship scandal in Canda would be the end to the Martin regime... Corrupt people love corrupt governments. The German Left party won't be destroyed.
The one thing I like about this Left Party is the honesty of its name. It doesn't called itself "Progressive"... what's progressive about advocating a failed 70 year-old ideology?
good point.
Nothing but it makes them feel like they're moving forward.
I barely follow news on the Left Party, and even I knew they had East German muckity mocks in it way before the election. So why would this be news to the people of Germany? Why would they care?
I'm surprised the "former" Commies got less than 10%, but then again they had to run against the Greens and the SDP, which are pretty Communist themselves.
The Greens and the SPD just package communism more slickly.
I teach at the college level.
There are still young people who idealize about the redistribution of wealth, legislating morality, making this a "perfect" world via the state, that is, no private property, government control of everything, a godless society and taxes up the wazoo.
These "children" have nothing, no money, no job, no property and no parents who have anything either.
When they get "stuff" and money, they will change their tune.
To quote Winston Churchill (paraphrase)-- "If at 20 you're not liberal, you have no soul. If at 40 you're not conservative, you have no brains."
REVOTE!
What the heck kind of govt do they have over there? All these parties bombing out, refusals of concessions - sounds like a bicameral romper-room at best.
HEIL SCHRODER!!!

Schröder aide passed Nato plans to East
A SENIOR adviser to Gerhard Schröder, the German chancellor, has been accused of passing confidential documents to East Germany in the 1980s which revealed how the British Army and RAF would react to an attack by Soviet-led Warsaw Pact forces. The details were among more than 100 pages of material allegedly given to the East Germans by Karsten Voigt, 63, a former MP who now works for the German foreign ministry as co-ordinator of German-American relations.
