Rummy could say yes or no to the Clinton Pentagon "holdovers", could he not?
By the way, I'm not attacking Rummy. He or whomever could have had a good reason for the first decision (which was then changed), for all I know. My point was, it LOOKED like a coverup to those who wanted to see it that way, and I know for a fact that many FReepers were saying that this was of sufficient importance that Rummy or others at the Pentagon could not make the decision stick without the President's involvement. They accused Bush of the coverup, too.
I would think that the President would get involved if he felt it necessary. You have noted how he has done so in some circumstances.
I forgot to respond about Julie Myers.
I am not talking about the President's staff, I am talking about the President. Whether or not the President had it pointed out to him that she is married to Chertoff's Chief of Staff and is the niece of General Myers.
What you say about reasons for picking her could be true, but I find it seriously flawed for the staff or the President himself not to take seriously the huge downside to naming someone with such close personal connections to people who are also in charge of Homeland Security.
Whatever the facts that led up to this, you have got a great outcry against her appointment. She makes such an easy target. Most of the time, the nonsense his enemies spew against his appointments is easy to laugh off. This one appears to be different, to me.
If he did not know of the appearance of Nepotism beforehand, and now there is a big public stink over her selection, that would be something to get mad about.
If you have that made into a bumper sticker, let me know where I can send a couple of bucks. I'd LOVE to put that on the rear of my van!
When I heard the full quote of Gen. Honore, "See, now you are stuck on stupid. I'm not gonna answer that question.", I laughed out loud. But when I saw him I thought a vein was going to burst in his neck. Man, he was hot!
Now if only someone would say that to Gregory, I'd be content. In fact, I'd pay to present when anyone, someone, said that to Gregory. Oh, how delicious, to think of him getting handed exactly what he deserves.
BTW, thanks for the Dose. My back is so bad, I usually only get to the Dose the next Morning, and even then, have to take "breaks" and go lie down, to stop the spasms in my back. No one knows what's causing it but it sure is making my life miserable.
"Whether or not the President had it pointed out to him ..."
Wouldn't the President's STAFF be responsible to point that out to him ..??
Even though - because of his relationship with Meyers, he might have known her already.
(However the Federal Government should not have to cover up a Governor's incompetence they should be able to work seamlessly with them not constantly battle them.)
You're exactly right. Did you notice how well the grown up, responsible, intelligent people did in TX? Also, you don't hear all the whining and they're not waiting around for someone else to come in and do their jobs for them.
