Would appreciate any info you have on the Bay Oaks area of south Houston. A friend just called and said they gave up on getting north (been in traffic on I45 since 4:30 am) and have turned around and headed back home. I don't know Houston real well, but memory serves that Bay Oaks is close to the bay.

Will it be prone to high storm surge?

At the top of the thread, there is a link to a Houston Flood Risk map. Beyond that, maybe one of the TX FReepers knows that area.

If the Bay Oaks area is near the Johnson Space Center (there's a Bay Oaks Country Club there), it's 20-24 feet above sea level, except near the Horsepen River, which is 11 feet above sea level. The river flows into Clear Lake, which flows into Galveston Bay. So the area could be flooded by the storm surge, depending on where it makes landfall.

There's also a Bay Oaks Road on the shore of Galveston Bay in a town called Shoreacres. The road is at 10 feet in many places away from the shore. The area doesn't appear to have much of a seawall.

I've never heard of Bay Oaks, but all of the area southeast of Houston is vulnerable to storm surge. At the moment, the storm track won't produce massive storm surge around the Bay, but probably all areas 6-8 feet above sea level will still get flooded.

My BIL left Sugarland @ 4am today and got to Dallas around 4pm via the back roads. (Well state Highways & Farm to Market Roads). Is is too late to head SW toward San Antonio & then go north?
