"Barge, a Democratic operative who led the research unit for a liberal media watchdog group run by journalist David Brock before joining the committee in February, reported her actions to the committee's executive director, J.B. Poersch Jr., within hours."
- Now why would Barge, one of the thieves, report the theft to the executive director within hours of committing the crime?
May I suggest that somehow she became aware that someone at the credit agency had caught on to what she was up to, was tracing the theft back to her doorstep and the whole scam was about to be exposed. In a panic she decided to fess up in the hopes that the boss could put pressure on the agency to let the matter quietly drop if she resigned.
If she had not feared being caught there is no way she would have outed herself and she would now be busy doing the job that she enjoys best - standing in the background and smirking smugly as she smeared peoples reputations for a grateful Dem headquarters.

By jove I think you are on to something. Dems never pull back unless they hear the old song "here comes da judge".

I like this scenario. I think you have explained fessing up to crookedness.
