"Both Wisconsin Democrats (Kohl, Feingold) vote for Roberts. Why?"
Catholic thing. I think it has alot to do with the catholic vote in Wisconsin. I must admit I am surprised since Feingold usually is on the loony left.
Democrats who vote 'yes' on Roberts (Leahy, Feingold, et al) do so for only one reason: so that they can pose as moderate and reasonable when the next nominee comes down the pike.... any conservative nominated next will now be smeared with "Well I was willing to support Judge Roberts, but now this guy/gal is a real EXTREMIST...." The 'Rats are merely positioning themselves for the next fight, which will be a bloodbath.
Wasn't Feingold a classmate of Roberts at Harvard Law School?
You may have a point re: Feingold and Kohl's "Yes" votes for Roberts. Wisconsin has about a 35% Catholic population, and conservative Catholics have made a point to note that some of the Democratic rhetoric against Roberts crossed the line into "know-nothing land".
Kohl and Feingold (D) (WI) can do arithmetic. Leahy (VT) is a surprise.
Bush lost Wisconsin by 12,000 votes (manufacturred).
Feingold also asked a 2nd A question from a pro-gun angle to Roberts.
