WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 - When people refer to battlegrounds in presidential races, they are usually not thinking of airport runways. But those people probably have not heard of Runway 4/22 at the airport in Las Cruces, N.M.
The runway, the airport's longest, has been closed since President Bush made a campaign stop in August 2004. It has gouges six inches deep and a hundred yards long, which the city says were put there by two Air Force cargo planes accompanying the president. Las Cruces put the damage at $2.1 million.
The city said airport officials warned the Air Force that the planes, a giant C-17 and a military version of the 757, were too heavy, and that the hot asphalt would be too soft for landing that day.

Here is a suggestion: fix the runway!
The runway was clearly defective to suffer this kind of damage. Probably the hardtop was laid without a proper base. And the Air Force denies that it was warned.
Meantime, the city council is trying to get enough money from the feds to fix the entire runway, not just the damaged section.
The Air Force has offered $600,000 dollars to repair the damage. Does anyone really believe it would cost that much to cut out two tire marks a hundred yards long and replace the asphalt in that area? No, they are fishing for enough money to fix the whole runway, or maybe put some gravy in the pockets of their contractor brother-in-laws.
How many anti-Bush stories has the NY Fishwrap run in the past five years, I wonder? Where do they get this stuff?
I'd understand it if you killed yourself.
"It has gouges six inches deep and a hundred yards long"
Sounds like the typical marks left from any normal landing of a French Airbus jet.
Enough is enough, man. I'm sick and tired of this constant trashing of Bush. It's one hell of a propaganda campaign.
They should have used this one last year as an October surprise. They could have coupled it along with that bogus Al Qa Qa munitions story.
MurryMom is a communist from Murry, PA who JimRob lets post here. Don't let her get to you, just revel in her pain. The last 5 years have been horrible for her. Enjoy them.
Since President Bush leaves a trail of DEATH and DESTRUCTION where ever he goes, I suggest he personnally visit all the LIEberal MSM outlets in the US and worldwide.
Kerry and Gore both lost. Move on.
Hi Mom!
I'll take this story seriously when the New York Times does a story about the deceased agent's family. You know, how they are coping with the loss, and all.
At least Dubya didn't hold up traffic by getting a $200 haircut like slick willy did in California.
Have the RATs so soon forgotten the $400 haircut the Felon had while holding up air traffic at LAX for an hour or so? How much did that cost? Richardson has the dough, let him fix the runway.
Atlest they chased the cows off the runway.
The story about President Clinton's $200 haircut holding up traffic at LAX (and the alleged $400 haircut mentioned 2 posts down from yours) are both urban legends/pure fiction sponsored and paid for by the RNC. Neither one ever happened. Here's a link, comparing the delay that never happened at LAX to Laura Bush's recent $700 haircut.

ROTFL! Of course not, dear. But you should be more creative next time...use "Halliburtion" instead of the RNC.
Oh, and that whole "election" thing where Bush won? Nope, pure fiction made up by the RNC. ;o)
