IMMEDIATE RITA EVAC TRAFFIC RECOMMENDATIONS
If these people do NOT get out of harm's way soon. the hurricane or torrential rains will overcome them! The Military should clear and OPEN UP some of the opposite south roadway for EMG northern flow traffic passage to alleviate this northern snail's pace congestion and get people off the roads and to higher ground faster!
In the immediate future, there should be color-coded lanes on each side of the hideway for EMG situations so they know automatically that these roads will open up to accomodate congestion.
Hopefully they are also evacuating the people....LOL
Follow the yellow brick road..
E.D. and Steve just said the contra-flow on 45 will start in 1 hr and 17 min, followed by 10 (did not give a time frame).
What if the people don't like the colors?
"100 mile backup at this crawling pace per hour), they are silmultaneously, showing us empty lanes going South"
I haven't been able to figure that out either.
If I understood this correctly, they're going to open up all the lanes in a few minutes--per Fox.
What's the point of waiting so long? Test people's patience and car engines?

I suppose one should leave the incoming lanes open so people can get back in... emergency workers, relatives picking people up, etc. One would not want to close off ingress too quickly.
If that frustrates you, just pretend you're in NASCAR traffic. Anyone who has gone to a NASCAR race will appreciate this joke.
I have not commandeered anyone's ideas in my life and simply looked at the television on my coffee break and saw that it was self-evident.
Sorry, you feel slighted and pirated about this idea, but my eyes are open and God gave me them to see the obvious-so obviously, you are on track too! However, many times good ideas can come to light to save people - more is never enough!
Get off the air. This is an emergency.
Reread #4 please No one is accusing you of anything.
They are opening the southbound lanes right now...still won't matter..cars are parked on the highway and not going anywhere...soon these people are going to start running out of gas...we in downtown Houston right now and trying to figure out whether we should try the road or just hunker down...we are in a 4 story cement apartment building on the second floor...any one with thoughts on the safety of staying here for the storm?
I've been wondered that myself. I understand it is a logistical nightmare to convert both lanes of interstate traffic in one direction. Imagine the frustration of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic while watching one's gas supply evaporate.
Sheesh. wondered = wondering
It would be helpful if the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) suspended all temporary lane closures for road construction.
It's called contraflow and it is being done.
In Alabama I65 and several tributary highways are all lanes northbound when the coast is evacuated. They even have reversible signs to handle this.
I'm still trying to figure out why tens of thousands of people wait until the last minute to leave. I understand that there might be some with legitimate reasons for staying so long but not that many.
