FWIW - Brother-in-Law left Sugarland (Houston Metro) @ 4am this morning. Wife got him on the cell phone and this was his travel experience:

4am: Leave Sugarland with a full tank
6am: 35 miles of progress
6:01am: Get off I-45 and take back roads.
("non-interstate state highways is probably a better description").
2:15pm about 60 miles south of Dallas, all but the first 35 miles were non-interstate.

My sis and family left League City at 11:50 last night and arrived in Trinity at 5 this morning. My bro in law has always been a back roads kinda guy.

After just looking at those photos...I can't imagine sitting in a parking lot on the highway. Glad to hear your bil knew the back roads.

Hey, that report sounds better than my relative's report.

4 AM left Sugarland

12 Noon arrived at Kingwood (usually 1 hour drive)

They decided just to stay at another relative's house there in Kingwood instead of going further north out of Houston. Said traffic was unbelievable -- people having picnics along the interstate.

Whew, he was lucky. At 7 AM this morning, we called friends from UTMB in Galveston. Had offered them a bed but they finally found one in San Antonio. They'd left home in the middle of the night and said it had taken them 4 hours to get from the south side of Houston to the Galleria. Also, called family in Conroe who are hunkering down to tell them Mr. M took the week off in case they needed help. They said not to come because there's no gas. Others in Shiner said gas and grocery were already shut down.

Mr. M said the prison was already evacuating inmates from Sugarland. All 800 inmates from Galveston area (UTMB and Ramsey Unit) were already being housed in at Hughes Unit in Gatesville (near Ft. Hood). 200 inmates in each gym - any bets on riots soon?
