Nazi Hunter

In taking note of the life of Simon Wiesenthal, the great Nazi hunter who died yesterday at 96 after surviving the Soviet NKVD, numerous German death camps and a 1982 assassination attempt, we are reminded of Andrew Jackson's famous aphorism: "One man with courage makes a majority."

Equally remarkable was Mr. Wiesenthal's insistence on backing up his allegations with voluminous documentary evidence. This could get him into scraps, as when he refused to denounce Kurt Waldheim, the one-time SS officer and later U.N. Secretary General and President of Austria, as a war criminal. Some Jewish leaders accused him of a cover-up; Mr. Wiesenthal replied that "accusations from Jewish sources must be able to stand up to all tests of credibility." Such evidentiary standards stand in stark contrast with those of groups such as Amnesty International, with their loose and incendiary accusations of "torture" at Guantanamo or "war crimes" in Jenin.

Toward the end of his life, Mr. Wiesenthal lent his name to a number of centers dedicated to advancing the cause of tolerance world-wide. ----------------- snip -----------

I really hope he has the chance to testify against certain people who preceded him into the hereafter, like Hitler, Goering, Mengele, etc. I would love to see him confront whatever is left of those evil beings.

And then I would like to think he is enjoying his life with those whose lives he worked so hard to memorialize by seeking justice. Six million voices expressing their appreciation for his life work. Rest in peace, Sir.

Last Nazi big that I am aware of that is still on the loose is a guy named Brunner, who worked for the Syrians after the war, and lives in an apartment in Damascus. He was a reportedly a 'troubleshooter' for Eichmann. He is said to be easily recognizable, missing an eye and several fingers from opening letter bombs sent by the Mossad.

Hopefully, they'll get the b@stard with the next one. Syria has ignored extradition requests for his worthless hide from a lot of countries.

The passing of Mr. Weisenthal brings to an end the life of a truly remarkable and brave man.

No one ever gets away with anything. Either you repent in this life and pay the dues or suffer the consequences in the next one.

I remember a few years ago watching a couple who ran their own business let it go to pot over watching hour after hour of the OJ Simpson trial. They were truly upset at the verdict. Me? I didn't really let it get to me because if OJ did it, he will pay the price at some time: here or there.

And that's what will happen to Brunner. I would like to see Weisenthal greet him at the Pearly Gates and usher him to his new home.

Alois Brunner

The last leading Nazi still believed to be on the loose
	SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Alois Brunner - Eichmann's second in command - was a key figure in the planning and execution of the Final Solution, the murder of 6 million Jews during World War II. He actively participated in the mass murder and was often sent by Eichmann as a trouble shooter to areas such as France to expedite the killings.  Alois Brunner bears direct responsibility for the deportation to Nazi death camps of 128,500 Jewish men, women and children from Austria, Greece, France, and Slovakia. The arrest and conviction of Alois Brunner remains the top priority of leading Nazi hunters and war investigators but Brunner has successfully eluded justice. During his many years hiding out reportedly in an apartment on Haddad Street in the Syrian capital of Damascus, he openly assisted the Syrians in establishing their own secret police. Despite Syria's claims that he's either dead or gone, many believe the former SS Hauptsturmfuhrer is still there, well out of justice's reach as he lives comfortably into his ninth decade. The Syrian authorities have covered and continue to cover Alois Brunner and he may never pay for his crimes. Germany, Austria, Slovakia, France and Poland currently seek his extradition, but the Syrians have been totally uncooperative in response to all these requests. There are still many, perhaps thousands, of Nazi war criminals at large in the world - this is the story of one of them ..
