Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast
Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu
A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.
Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

I'm just joshin' ya. I prefer Boeing aircraft myself, but I've flown a couple of Airbuses out of San Juan.
I understand this is the second time this "twisted forward gear" has happened on the 320.
Would this have anything to do with the C-checks being done in El Salvador?

No pilots union at Jet Blue, all the planes are pretty new, fleet of A320 and EMB 190 planes.

It's showing non stop on MSNBC right now.

You are right they are preparing for a crash landing. Had friends in a similar situation in SF ten years ago. My friend said the looks on the flight attendants told them everything. Their entire family except the small children were on that plane. They landed safely.

The tires are sideways and upon contact with the runway, the tire will peel away from the rim. Some months back there was a pic of an A320 with the same problem that landed somewhere (can't remember). It was on the-mechanic.com. Supposedly a key or pin wasn't installed correctly and the wheels ended up 90 degrees out.
Peeled the tires, ate the wheels (or most of them) and ended up fine (in that case).

"I'm gonna bet that the tires will blow first."
You could be right. Because the nose gear has to be able to rotate freely for getting towed, I would suspect this was caused by a break in the linkage that locks the nose gear forward for taxiing. If that linkage is broken, than the gear can probably swivel freely. The question will be whether or not the tires will hang on to allow the gear to pivot correctly before they peel off the wheels.

I have to hand it to MSNBC (as pigs fly by my window), they are assuming the passengers are watching on their DirecTV and whoever is talking now is assuring the passengers directly that there is a very high probability that they will be on the ground safely very soon.LOL, I noticed the same thing. Prayers for all on board and for the pilots.
To: agrace
Yeah, they've been doing that periodically for any family members listening

I'm not solving the case. Only raising a question which is a legitimate one in this time of terrorism.
To: mylife
It wont snap, it will grind the wheel halves off down too, and half way thru the axle.
