Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast
Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu
A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.
Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

I meant KABC-TV 7, of course...duh

Wow, how cool is that. The engineers had to know EXACTLY how the craft would behave. And they were right!

They all watched the landing on DirecTV on the seatbacks. How funny. We got info saying they shut off that seatback video system 30 minutes prior to touchdown, and all were watching up until it was shut off. Typical media.

Kudos to the flight crew and emergency crews. Thumbs down on the media for announcing the flight number and sensationalising this on live TV. I can only imagine the worry families and loved ones felt while watching this flight land and praying they made it out okay.

Did I just see Karl Rove flying that plane?

"I also heard that it's an airbus, or how ever you spell it..."Error Bus is how you spell it. It's a french imitation 737.

Tonight on MSNBC they said the DIRECTV was kept on until about 5 minutes before touchdown. Many on this thread said it was probably turned off, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The problem with foam is if there's no immediate danger of fire, it could make things worse. It could act as a lubricant, getting in the brakes and giving the pilot less control. Another reason is that it could cause the heated wheel rims and brakes to explode. That's why the fire crews didn't spray anything on them.
Would that be the nose wheel brakes?

"How could they possible omit a fuel-dump capability?" By using surplus Renault Dauphine fuel tanks?

I watched the whole thing too! Wonderful landing! I was eating supper and walked out to the living room and saw the plane on final on the TV!

Would that be the nose wheel brakes? The mains. There are no brakes on the nose wheel.

Tonight on MSNBC they said the DIRECTV was kept on until about 5 minutes before touchdown. Many on this thread said it was probably turned off, but that doesn't appear to be the case. That's what they said on KNBC also. Most TV's were on MSNBC since MSNBC was the only one carrying the event earlier than CNN or FOX News (according to a NBC/Universal employee who happend to be a passenger).

How could they possible omit a fuel-dump capability? They didnt' "dump fuel" as the media initially said. Common sense would tell anyone, even in the media, that a plane flying for 3 hours in a circle is going to burn off fuel.

Jet Blue used to fly out only from Long Beach, but I think they added Burbank not too long ago, so they now fly out of both.Right. LAX just has longer and wider runways than LB or Burbank.

Yes I know they didn't dump fuel. My incredulous question was "how could Airbus omit from the design of the plane the capability to dump fuel?"

expert on MSNBC just slammed airbus vs. boeing for airbus "not allowing the pilot flexibility at times like this", or something similar to that.AmericaWest pilot said Jetblue has some of the best pilots in the industry.
