Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast

Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu

A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.

Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

Isn't Jet Blue the old ValuJet company with a history of poor maintenance?

ValuJet is now AirTran.

Jet Blue does contract out their heavy maintenance in Central America, though. It would be interesting to find out if this plane is recently out of a C Check.

If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going.

I'd place a greater likelyhood on the fault being caused by the last person to have performed maintenance on the gear rather than the manufacturer.

No, no, I have a hatred of the french because of an irrational plane.

Did you know that it was the French who selected the site for New Orleans? Just another reason to despise them.

"Holy smoles. My husband and I are leaving Friday on a Jetblue flight, and my hubby HATES to fly. If he hears this on the news, I may not get him on the plane."

That will be the safest part of your trip. Watch out for the drive to and from the airport! :)

A similar America West incident from 1999 from NTSB Website :

NTSB Identification: NYC99IA062 .
The docket is stored in the Docket Management System (DMS).
Please contact Public Inquiries
Scheduled 14 CFR Part 121: Air Carrier operation of AMERICA WEST AIRLINES
Incident occurred Tuesday, February 16, 1999 in COLUMBUS, OH
Probable Cause Approval Date: 5/9/2001
Aircraft: Airbus Industrie A-320-231, registration: N628AW
Injuries: 31 Uninjured.

When the landing gear was lowered, the flight crew received landing gear control and interface unit (LGCIU) faults. A visual fly-by revealed the nose wheels were rotated 90 degrees from the desired direction for landing. A normal touchdown was made, after which, the captain commanded an emergency evacuation using the overwing exits. Examination of the airplane revealed the external 'O' rings in the steering control valve had extruded and by-passed pressurized hydraulic fluid to rotate the nose wheels. This event had occurred before, and the manufacturer had issued a service bulletin. The operator had not complied with the service bulletin, nor were they required to comply with it.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this incident as follows: a failure of the external o-rings in the nose landing gear steering module.

It is one of life's inexplicable absurdities.

That comment succinctly explains 90% of the entertainment industry.

It means the throttles rolled back from their power-on settings to idle, despite the pilots attempts to position the throttle levers to provide some level of power for the airplane.

All of this happed a few hundred feet above the ground, while "in the soup" (that is, in weather), on approach to the Memphis airport.

You won't hear any of that from the Dems on this one. Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, and George Soros were all key to jetBlue getting off the ground in the first place.

Really? I don't know the history of JetBlue. Only used them a few times. I would rate their service as good-excellent.

Man! I left home at 4 and just got back, never even knew anything was ongoing. Luckily enough, my husband came home right before it landed and recorded from WABC-TV, which is the one that uses a high-definition helo-mounted news camera. Spectactular!

Reports from Tom Bradley terminals. Passengers moved all overhead bags to the rear of the plane, and passengers were all seated toward the lessen the weight on the forward section of the Airbus. They all watched the landing on DirecTV on the seatbacks.
