STARS UNLEASHED AT KATRINA FUNDRAISER... (Drudge)

New Orleans descended on New York for two concurrent concerts, dubbed From the Big Apple to the Big Easy, Tuesday night to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Big names such as Dave Matthews, Simon and Garfunkel, and Elton John filled the bills of the shows held at Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden, but New Orleans acts from the Meters to the Neville Brothers were the focus of the evening's entertainment.

Piano player and studio whiz Allen Toussaint led the house band for the first segment of the MSG concert, alongside Late Show With David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer. Together they hosted a rotating panel of guests that included Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Jimmy Buffett and New Orleans soul queen Irma Thomas, who performed her classic "Time Is on My Side," famously covered by the Rolling Stones in 1964. Aaron Neville joined Toussaint for a chilling take on Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," sung against a backdrop of horrific images from flood ravaged New Orleans.

Political chatter was kept to a minimum at both events, with performers mostly sticking to the program: championing aid for New Orleans. But a few artists angrily denounced government officials for their slow response to Katrina's devastation. "I Wish New Orleans was dry and Washington was underwater," said Tom Waits. Bette Midler had even stronger words: "I got a letter from the Republican Party the other day. I wrote back, 'Go "f" yourself.'" She then added, "George Bush is a fan of mine -- he came to see me in the Seventies. His coke dealer brought him."

There was nothing but love for one former Oval Office resident, however: Bill Clinton's surprise appearances at both concerts were greeted with long standing ovations.

"Bette Midler had even stronger words: "I got a letter from the Republican Party the other day. I wrote back, 'Go f**k yourself.'"

I saw her in concert a few months ago, and she did a lot of this and with the same 'colorful' language. She tore into Bush, Republicans and Rush. All I really wanted was a concert, not a sermon.

Bette's ghost haunts my house. Wait she still alive? Then it must be her career that is dead. Say anything to get people to notice her. Sort of like BS. Maybe they could tour togeather. They could play gay clubs or something.

looks like ms middler isn't hurting for nourishment living in this country with Dubya as our leader. Looks like she lives a pretty cushiony life. Looks like she's getting enough to eat and drink huh? If she doesn't like it she can leave. Oh wait...the food and drink wouldn't be as available to her now would it? I forgot...she knows what side of the bread is buttered so while she bad mouths the person who provides the butter she stuffs it into her mouth nonetheless.

There's something very pathetic with people who are so needy for attention: Middler, clintin (both of them) kerry, stiesand and the rest of that silly group of people that call themselves humans.

They DO have one thing in common. Has beens ALL.

"I got a letter from the Republican Party the other day. I wrote back, 'Go fuck yourself.'" She then added, "George Bush is a fan of mine -- he came to see me in the Seventies. His coke dealer brought him."

Classy. Then they stand up and cheer for a lying rapist who never gave a thought to anything other than where his next bj coming from.....

Woe to those who call good evil, and who call evil good...

Thanks for that photo. I sent it to a couple people when I first saw it on the AOL screen but I couldn't find ANYTHING written about it. Who was it? Whomever it was she ought to go cover herself. One can go too far and maybe her crowd likes it but not all of us want to see her or her parts. She is beyond the pale and off the scale of decency. She actully should have been arrested for lewdness. Doesn't that tell you how bad these people need to be noticed? Unfortunately, she thinks she was noticed for herself. She was only noticed by what some people think is cool. Does anyone know who that was????????????????????????

Every tragedy is now an opportunity for these sick, narcissistic showboats to shoot off their stupid mouths.

Why don't they spare us the "entertainment" and give from their considerable savings. Maybe each star could give 10% of their net worth.

I have never in my lifetime seen so many people so unreasonably angry. I have still to hear George W Bush say one bad word about any of his political enemies. Yet, the more classy he is (see how he even raises the profile of the Clintons-I don't know why!) the more vociferously nasty they are. They don't realize just how disgusting they look to the rest of America, especially juxtaposed with the classy Bush.

I know what you mean
I saw Streisand a few years ago and she had Dan Quayle jokes along with pro abortion statements. The whack libs we were with clapped for the latter, too bad for a great concert.

As a farmer in PA (with no subsidy, thank you very much) let these SOB's starve to death and anyone else that's not ready for the onslaught that's about to happen. I called the American Red Cross to get help to pick potatoes 2 weeks ago and got no response. They had a picnic to go to.- free and all taken care of. Let them all starve!!!!!!! Get ready, folks.!!!!!!!!
