The fact is that the Dims have been in a permanent political campaign and political destruction mode since 2000. No matter what happens, they shape their telling of current history as a loss for Bush no matter what, and the media follows their lead.

If Bush stayed out of the media focus right now, they would be saying "see, just like Katrina, Bush doesn't care". And not that Bush's personal efforts should make much difference to those on the ground in Texas, who need to do what they need to do, any Bush media notice now will be used by the Dims and the media as Bush "pandering" and not as a legitimate response to prior, media-driven, perceptions.

With the Dims and their media, it's always lose-lose for Bush, no matter what.

How can we be alarmed about what is predictable?

You found the crux of the problem.

I'm Republican, but disagree with a lot of President Bush's policies. (Immigration for one) I'd consider voting 'Dim', but they don't have anything at all to offer other than 'Bush is an idiot' and 'we'll do it different'.

Even assuming that I agree with #1 (I don't), what else do they have for me? I'll take a man with a plan - even a plan that I don't agree 100% with - over a bunch of clueless wanderers any day. /vent off
