I don't think there's any question all of Texas would have done better than La. even if Katrina hadn't happened. I also think Texas will do much better and more people will flee than would have if Katrina hadn't happened first.

Nagin actually had a third excuse for not using the buses: they couldn't tell the people exactly where they'd be going once they got on.

Ummmm...AWAY FROM THE HURRICANE AND GANGS should've been enough.

Hey Ray, if there's a next time, tell them they're goin' to Vegas to get 'em on the buses. Then you can tell the MSM it's FEMA's fault your peeps didn't go to the Bellagio.

Maybe New Orleans should appoint this guy mayor.

Jabbar Gibson's first time behind the wheel of a school bus was spent
transporting dozens of people from New Orleans to the Reliant Astrodome.

I don't think thats how they are going to play it. I think the talking point will be" why didn't W do as much for black folk in NO as he is doing for the white folk in Texas."

"What? Are you telling me that the Texans have stooped to riding on those "substandard" school buses? With no air conditioning???? Or stereo????"

Or tiolets, i.e. GreyHound.

There's a reason there's so many buses. Galveston has a large percent of folks who have never left the island in their entire lives. Being an island, things are in close proximity so there's no need for a car if they have no plans of ever crossing the bridge to the mainland. The first buses were heading north to Huntsville. Ya'll know Huntsville is a prison town. That's where they execute deathrow inmates. Some of the old prison is unused and I'm wondering if that's where the evacuees will be housed. The buildings are good strong brick. Of course the media will have a field day with that!

Hate to say, some of those evacuees might know Huntsville better than others. The most frightened I've ever been is once when I made a wrong turn (I know, difficult to do on Galveston) and ended up in the ghetto. Oooh, the stares I got and some started to come out into the road.

The state began evacuating the prisoners in UTMB Sunday or Monday. UTMB is "the" hospital the state uses for major hospital care of all it's inmates. Any major medical will have to wait or emergencies will have to now be handle in local hospitals. Of course that will mean more strain on the already short prison staff to escort and and place guards round the clock for each inmate. Hey, Nagin, takin' notes?

Last hurricane Mr. M was in there was Alicia and he wasn't allowed by employment to leave. He said there were ice cream and bbq parties everywhere. Red Cross charged for coffee, sandwiches, and blankets so if memories serve the folks in Galveston, they'll not be welcome.

No toilets on school buses.

No toilets? Why I'd rather curl up and try to sleep in 100 degree, ankle deep sewage in a football arena someplace than to chance that!

Wait a minute...the buses could pull over at a gas station or something every couple hours, right?

Never mind.

Jabbar Gibson's the ONLY person in NO that showed REAL initiative by cutting through the bureaucracy and get things done.

Give the boy(...er, man) a medal!

Why isn't Texas "burdened" and "overwhelmed" by having nearly the ENTIRE evacuee population of LA.

Why isn't Texas whining about getting little or no aid?

And yet they seem to be able to manage BOTH populations with ease and safty?

We all know the answer.......

Texas seems to have a plan at the ready long before Katrina.

How else was Houston able to get everything ready for the Katrina victims in 48 hours. It's because they already had it all available for a hurricane if one hit them.

I hope they have supplies now for Rita.
