Any time you can mosey on down to the swamps of coastal Georgia, we'll gather at the BlueBird Cafe' for southern ice tea- the stuff that makes "energy drinks" look whimpy, it has so much caffeine.

Until then, here's a little more:

UPDATE 1:24 PM CDT: The National Hurricane Center is reporting a central pressure of 920 mb with sustained winds of over 150 mph. Look for Rita to become a Category 5 storm within the next few hours.

Here's how its done Mayor Nagin   - I think I'm beginning to sense a pattern here. FL (both this year and last), AL, MS, and TX are all red states which seem to have had far fewer problems than LA, the only blue state in the bunch.

Galveston Independent School District buses carry evacuees off the island on Interstate 45 Wednesday.

A reporter in Galveston just told 540am here in Orlando that the original evacuees from New Orleans DO NO MIND BEING RELOCATED BECAUSE THEY KNOW ARE BEING TAKEN TO SAFETY this time. She also points out that TX evacuees are allowed to take their pets when they evacuate and this is crucial because pets are family members too and some in NO would not leave home without them.

It is about 45 miles from Galveston to Houston. It is about
60 miles from Gulfport to Hattiesburg and Hattiesburg took a pounding from Katrina.

These two pictures should be used in election campaigns throughout the nation.

For comparison purposes, the 1:15 pm CDT update had the winds at 150 mph, while the 2:55 pm update kicked it up to 165 mph. There has not been an update on the pressure yet (was at 920 mb at 1:15).

The following is copied from another post ( click the "536" link to see it )-- for informational purposes. A hand-cranked radio & light are a good idea, there are several models & prices available; just google it:

Below is a link to the PERFECT addition to anybody's hurricane survival gear. When the power goes out, and it usually does, there's nothing better than to be able to have a working television to track a storms progress.

The best thing about these are that they have a hand crank generator to save on batteries.

Hmmm link didn't work.

since we are protected, guarded, and totally loved by our two dogs, I am so happy to hear that people are allowed to evacuate with crated pets...

and for you dog people out there, this is a very good reason to get your pets "crate trained"... which isn't at all hard to do. If they love their crates, they will be much happier about the "strangeness" of evacuation.

Best long term way to crate train dogs is to sneak wonderful smelly "treats" in their crate when they aren't looking. They discover all on their own that the crate is the place where mysterious goodies just magically appear.

After that, it is time to give them all of their food in their crates... they see the crate as "the place" to go for food..

After they get used to that, then you can teach the command, "go to your crate", with a extra special treat promptly given. After they get that concept, move the crate to a different location, repeat...

Once they get that "go to your crate" isn't place specific, then you start telling them to go to their crate when strangers come to the door, when you are having dinner, etc... and do not do the tasty treat until they learn to be "quiet" in the crate...

The crate then becomes a "safe place" in their lil doggie heads. Never crate a dog as a punishment. Never crate a dog for long periods of time. Make sure they have a favorite toy, or blanket, in their crate...

Just some suggestions... and make sure you spend money on a crate. The cheaper wire crates will not take a panicky dog with strong jaws. And, I prefer the tougher wire crates, because they have better ventilation in hot temperatures. These can collapse for travel, and can always be covered with a blanket if the dog needs a sense of security...
