BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (CNN) -- The difficult task of collecting the dead continued in New Orleans Wednesday, as Hurricane Rita gathered strength in the Gulf of Mexico, threatening to disrupt the recovery effort.
In Louisiana, the official death toll climbed to 799, the state's Department of Health and Hospitals said. Louisiana's rising toll brings the total number of deaths from the storm to 1,033.
Although Rita appeared headed for landfall on the Texas coast, Louisiana was preparing Wednesday to feel some effects from the Category 4 storm. (See video of Rita's path -- 2:04.)
"Rita scares us to death, at least it scares me to death," Louisiana Emergency Response Medical Director Dr. Louis Cataldie told CNN. Cataldie is in charge of the makeshift morgue in St. Gabriel, about 70 miles from New Orleans.

Rita should scare people to death. Katrina should have scared people but seems many did not take her seriously, to their peril.
If they evacuate, they're hysterical.
And if they don't evacuate, they're stupid morons.
Got it. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't.
Katrina was the lesson and Rita is the pop quiz.
And it's all President Bush's fault anyway, whatever you do.
I'm afraid you're right.
Nice of Nagin to loan our his school buses - lol
Anybody who doesn't pass must immediately leave the gene pool.
Sigh - if only it were that easy!
Nice of Nagin to loan our his school buses - lol
The reason that Nagin loaned out the school buses is because blacks from NO don't ride no damn school buses they just ride Grey Hound Buses so the school buses were available.
Well, they better have air-conditioning - it's a Constitutional Right!
Rita must be a real doozy!!

"UPDATE 2:15pm EDT: NHC is reporting a central pressure that indeed is matching with the Dvorak satellite estimates. Right now NHC is listing a central pressure of 920 mb with sustained winds of 150 mph. I suspect that within the next few hours we will see a Category 5 storm.
"The infrared satellite image shows and extremely healthy core capable of supporting an incredible wind field. There are cloud top temperatures below -80 degrees C, which is just about the strongest that you can ever see from a hurricane."
