I'm quite familiar with that neighborhood, so I figured that's where you were staying.
On that note, I must caution you about driving in the Alexandria/Pineville area, and especially on the Ball strip of Hwy 165. It's very, very dangerous even without all the extra traffic in the area, a stretch of road which is notorious for accidents. I personally was stopped at a red light near the Pineville Wal-Mart and some moron smashed into the back of my car and totaled it. There are also quite a few logging trucks in the area, and they don't always have their jagged cargo securely fastened. Hopefully they won't be on the road in such windy conditions, but I figured I should bring that to your attention.
If you want to explore your surroundings for breakfast tomorrow morning, check out the strip mall by Ball Foods. There is a new, cute little restaurant called Lee-Lee's Coffee Depot that serves beignets. If you're still in town on Sunday, you might enjoy going to the Paradise Baptist Church. It's a nice congregation.

I crossed over I-45 at Madisonville and the lines at the stations on 4 corners were were backed up down the feeder on all sides--at least 4 hours to pump--even if they had gas left.
I'm glad I don't live in Houston anymore.

We learned from the Galveston hurricane of 1900 and others over the years. The reason Houston was able to open the Astrodome as an emergency shelter for Katrina evacuees on two hours notice was that it is constantly stocked with supplies to handle evacuees from Galveston in case of a hurricane.
If I'd known that, I 'd had to a steaming pot of strong coffee ready. :-)
We're hunkering down. Hubby will put up plywood on windows in the morning. Our house is totally covered with trees. I just pray they don't snap and fall on the house.
I'm a bundle of nerves but the family doesn't see it. Everyone seems to be taking their cue from me.
If they only knew how terrified I was they'd run screaming.
We're in a hundred year flood plain. That's not very comforting.
Oh well, we'll do the heavy lifting and leave the rest in God's hands.
I sure wish you all were leaving. Come on over here - cousin's house is big and you would like them. I don't like those trees either. If I have any left standing, they are coming down with chainsaw.
Shame my hubby isn't there to help with the plywood. He gets antsy to do something when things are going on and right now I have nerves bordering on raw.....like a few million other people. But can't let the girls see it.
I'd like to say if we made it through 8 years of Clinton, we will make it through Rita.......ok reaching here and I'm not very coherent - 3 hours sleep since Tues night. But I have just sent an urgent prayer up for you and your family to come through this safely with little or no damage. And if you decide to run this way - let me know.
john316..I live in clear lake near 2351 and space center. I evac'd on Wed to Austin, I am having to stay with my socialist brother-in-law. I'd rather be surfing.
Any port in a storm, eh John? Course in Austin the odds of any relatives being of the socialist persuasion are pretty high. But at least you are safer than in Clear Lake.
I think my daughter at wal marts yesterday got them to implement a new emergency shopping policy. It involved her and some Katrina evacuees and a buggy filled with bread.

My parents and their two cats and one dog just arrived safely here at my house in Nashville! They ended up taking 77 North all the way to Dallas, then I-30 to I-40 into Tennessee.
It took them about 9 hours to get to Dallas, from Sheridan, TX (near Columbus, 50 miles west of Houston, for those of you wondering). They said the biggest problem for them was not the traffic, but that the Highway Patrol kept stopping them at major intersections for hours at a time to let the major arteries from Houston flow more quickly (I-10, 290, etc heading northward). But we understand that this was necessary to keep the heaviest traffic lanes moving, so it sounds like the adults are in charge in Texas, coordinating traffic flow to ease the congestion problems.
It also looks like they'll have a home to go back to when this thing blows over -- the predicted tracks on Tuesday and Wednesday showed the eye going right over their house, but the eastward revisions of the predicted landfall track will end up sparing them a lot of grief.

Well, I'm here in Nederland, a few blocks north of Port Arthur. Getting rather blustery here. Don't know how much longer I'll have electricity. I stayed here to take care of my 91-year-old grandmother, who just got out of the hospital Wednesday, and is in fairly delicate condition. She sure couldn't have taken that evacuation nightmare. Gulfbreeze and family are safe in Destin, FL. They left out Wednesday and drove East on I-10 after finding some back road routes through Baytown. I don't know if he'll get a chance to get on-line and check in himself, so I posted this to let folks know he was ok.
Bellstar is riding the hurricane out in Kemah, taking photos of the flooding and damage. She is sticking close to the Kemah cops, so if they deem it too dangerous they will make sure she gets to higher ground.
Nothing to be ashamed of. If they can keep a few hundred in CASH hidden away for emergencies like this, they could relax a little. Rich or poor, cash is King.
In an emergency, a pauper with a twenty is worth more than a millionnaire with a bazillion credit cards.

The Houston evacuation plan is a joke. Worst 12 hours of my life yesterday stuck in gridlock in 100 degree heat.
But you're safe now.......and they are BOUND to get it right next time! Live and learn.
