NY Times Cutting 500 Jobs, 4 Percent Of Work Force

NEW YORK -- The New York Times Co. said Tuesday it would cut 500 jobs, or about 4 percent of its work force, as part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs. The reductions come atop another 200 jobs that were cut earlier this year.

I subscribe to one newspaper only, the Wall Street Journal. Despite them giving a platform to the likes of Kofi Annan, Al Hunt and in times past, Alexander Cockburn (once called 'the junkyard dog of socialism'), its still the best newspaper published in the United States. They have a dramatically improved arts and leisure section and they now have a Saturday edition.

As others have observed, the WaPo, NYT, LAT, etc. are at best fish wrap or bird cage liner. Toilet paper? One's fundament deserves better.

I do feel bad for those loosing their jobs however I do consider the paper bird cage liner like many others : ))

BTW, my husband is going to loose his job this year. He has been with this company since he graduated from college.

I dont hear no one crying for him, in fact he isnt crying either : ) Will be tough for a few months but we will be fine. Believe it or not he is upset for many of his coworkers.

Best bet on cutting staff at any newspaper is to round up the Liberals and fire half of them on the spot.

In most cases, in todays economy, people who want to work can find work. Even if it is not exactly what he wants, there is work out there. I wish your husband all the best, I am sure he will succeed.

That means, if I'm right, starting with 12,500 take 4% and come up with 500.
That's scratching the surface and allows for doing things as is.

Don't get me wrong, I hate to see anyone lose their jobs, as I was downsized after 20 years in 2001.

But the kind of liberal tripe promoted by the likes of the NYT, pushing every little whine of every special interest and minority group, causes knee-jerk reactions which sends the Congress into spasmotic twitches, passing more and more laws and regulations to stifle American business, thus causing it to send jobs overseas, where there is no EEO, EPA, etc, etc, etc.

Atlas is shrugging, as jobs move overseas, Americans have less and less disposable income, which makes merchants and businesses tighten up and they scuttle things like "ADVERTISING" - NYT's bread and butter.

Of course the crew that's left will blame it all on GWB, which is typical.

I'm still wondering how industries who are sending it all overseas, expect Americans to have the money to buy their products when they "import" them. The cycle will play out eventually, and we'll be known as the "homeless nation".

Sorry, I just can't work up too much sympathy for anyone associated with those bastions of liberal toilet paper. Sure, management and some of the left-wing columnists are the worst of the NY Slimes, but no one is forced to work there, and I'm quite sure most of them departing now will still have better prospects ahead of them than a lot of better people who have never been associated with the NY SLimes. I spent enough of my life around NY and Boston and Philly to know that anyone being "let go" by the NY Times companies still has better career prospects than a lot of other (better) people who never entered that cesspool in the first place.
