Just one of the many who deserted the call of duty.

All one has to see is the videotape of the two cops joining in the looting of a Wal-Mart.

The transcript of this story begins about 1/4 of the way down of the above link.

One point is, when the city pays cops a poverty wage, don't be surprised when thugs get recruited and stiff like this happens. You get what you pay for. NOPD was vastly underpaid and acted like it.

Has the NOPD taken the deserters and/or looters back?

One question........why was his WIFE still in NO? Everything flows from that.......one BAD decision after another.

While he may be a good man, he is NOT a good leader, he should resign or be "LET GO".

So in the face of a disaster of biblical proportions these fellows are supposed to, what, sacrifice themselves???

I don't condone the ones that joined in the looting, but anyone who thinks the police are going to let their families die while they "perform their duty" is just not in touch with reality.

I am pretty supportive of the deserters. If I was risking my life for Nagin's reputation, I'd have second thoughts about continued employment, too.

i suppose he was one of the poor oppressed blacks that couldn't get out of town with 3days notice. on the flip side, my wife and kids would come first, too. but he had an opportunity to get them out of town before that and stay back to do his job.

As soon as Hillary becomes President she will pardon them as Carter did the draft dodgers years ago. Heck, she will even give them metals!

(Gag.)

Ugh, just listening to his wife whine about how she needed him home so it's all her fault.

Disgusting lack of honor to one's duty.

Frankly, given the performance of the governor and mayor, who continued to actively interfere with efforts to mitigate the disaster long after the feds and Red Cross tried to step in to help, I think police officers who deserted should be pretty low on the list of people to criticize. I mean, what the heck are troops really expected to do, when their commanding officers retreat to safe ground and simply refuse to address the ongoing battle?

A Policeman's Prayer

Lord, I ask for courage;

Courage to face and conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go.
I ask for strength;
Strength of body to protect others...
Strength of spirit to lead others.
I ask dedication;
Dedication to my job to do it well...
Dedication to my community to keep it safe.
Give me, Lord, concern;
For all those who trust me...
And compassion for those who need me
And, please, Lord, through it all; be at my side.

I guess I am kind of torn on this one. I am thinking I wouldn't know what to do unless I faced that decision too. It is a hard one to call. Of course you love your family and want whats best for them and still, you have a job that requires you stay and enforce the law. I suppose he did what he thought in his mind was best in a time of panic.

Well, tonight, for the first time, in an exclusive report, you're about to hear from one of those who left, a high-ranking officer, and hear why he made that choice.

Lieutenants are "high-ranking officers" in NO?

LT. HENRY WALLER, NEW ORLEANS POLICE DEPARTMENT: I defend it by saying that I left them in a bad situation, but I have would have been leaving my wife in a worse situation.

Fine with me. Get a new job and stay with your wife.

"LT. HENRY WALLER, NEW ORLEANS POLICE DEPARTMENT: I defend it by saying that I left them in a bad situation, but I have would have been leaving my wife in a worse situation."

They have a right and obligation to care for their family members first and that is just the way it is.

Just what the heck were they supposed to do... Let their families be at risk because a bunch of welfare Moms and Gangsters were too stupid/greedy to get out?

Look they are Peace Officers not Soldiers so allegations of "Desertion" are so much baloney. In spite of Politician's big talk and Union rhetoric used to increase their salary they have a right to be relatively safe and go home at night to their families.

I support that right.

I think they did fine with few exceptions and that goes for all of us all the time doesn't it?

Just what did you want them to do run around with buckets in their hands biting their lip looking concerned like that Maroon Clintoon? Or ride around in a fishing pram without the drain plugs installed like that idiot Shaun Penn?

Lt's play "What If's

The Lt makes the choice to abandon his family to what comes then goes and saves Welfare Mom and her four Crack Kids.

Meanwhile Dr Dregs and his "Posse" Catch the Peace Officers wife trying to flee the city on her own. They slice her throat for the 23 dollars and thirty five cents in her purse, cut off her finger to get her $500 diamond wedding ring (after they entertain themselves with her first for a while her hands are too swollen to just pull it off her dead body).

Now that would be a good story too wouldn't it?

The press stinks, dont let yourself be sucked into their fantasy world and intepretations of events they have never faced in their lives.

He did the right thing took care of his family.
