Nope, they had no manes to start with. Look at the photo on the cover of the book at Amazon (which I think is lion No. 2) and at this one (lion No. 1)

I do know from reading that the lions are smaller in the museum because they had to work around the damaged hides. I either extrapolated (or read) that the manes were gone as part of the process. Nice to know they do look more like what they're supposed to look like!
