It called ownership.
That's true, but for a long time those old folks who came here with nothing were tenants. When they were finally able to buy homes it was in the same area, but they always treated their rented homes in the same way that they took care of their own property. You have to live somewhere, and just because you rent, does not mean that you ought to live in squalor. It is a self respect thing more than anything else. That neighborhood was around steel mills and the people were Italian, Ukranian, Spanish, Hungarian, Greek, Serbian, Portugese, black, and others too.
