And we had opinions about her too, not so very different from the media's basically unflattering portrait. But when we were asked by Sheila Nevins if we would be interested in making a film about Monica Lewinsky, we practically had to be restrained. Because, just like everyone else, we wanted to meet her.

It was like The View. Presided over by Sheila Nevins (standing in for Barbara) and together with associate producer Sara Bernstein and producer Lisa Heller, we huddled round analyzing every line, processing every nuance in obsessive scrutiny. It wasn't uncommon to spend four hours on a conference call or twelve hours watching a rough cut, poring over every detail. And we fought with an intensity that took us all by surprise. Rarely it seemed did we agree about anything, alternating between pity for Monica to incomprehension at how she could have gotten herself into this mess.
