Former President Clinton believes the Democrats should pounce on and exploit President Bush's refusal to hike taxes to finance Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"They should continue to oppose it, and they should make it an issue in the 2006 election, and they should make it an issue in the 2008 election," said Clinton, interviewed on Sunday on ABC's "This Week."
"I think it's very important that Americans understand... tax cuts are always popular, but about half of these tax cuts since 2001 have gone to people in my income group, the top 1 percent. I've gotten four tax cuts. They're responsible for this big structural deficit, and they're not going away, the deficits aren't."
Clinton said America's deficit has forced the United States to borrow "money from other countries to finance Iraq, Afghanistan, Katrina, and our tax cuts."
"We have never done this before. Never in the history of our republic have we ever financed a conflict, military conflict, by borrowing money from somewhere else."
The former president, who is involved in a Katrina relief fund-raising effort with former President Bush, elaborated on the issue of tax cuts, saying leaders should hope "for the sake of our country that the cows don't come home before we have time to rectify" the problem.
"I mean, sooner or later, just think what would happen if the Chinese -- we're pressing the Chinese now, a country not nearly as rich as America per capita, to keep loaning us money with low interest to cover my tax cut, Iran -- I mean Iraq, Afghanistan, and Katrina. And at the same time to raise the value of their currency so their imports into our country will become more expensive, and our exports to them will become less expensive."

Here's to hoping the Demwits make raising taxes a campaign issue in 06 & 08
Well isn't the answer obvious? More taxes cuts bring in more revenue, so we need more tax cuts.
I loved your #4 just as much!!!
Liberal solution to any problem:1. Throw money at problem(keeping out a percentage for operating expenses like buying votes etc.) 2. Raise taxes
If Bill was a doctor he would suggest cutting off your hand to stop your finger from bleeding.
Clinton should shut his imbecilic, marxist-hillbilly pie hole!
Every time I see Clinton on television or a picture of him, he looks like he is melting. The man must be getting sick again because his rationality seems to be melting as well.
He seems to think he is on a campaign to elect Hillary imminently when there are lot more procedures to go through before we have to gag our way through that thought.
I think he should go and have a refresher check up - the man looks unwell....serious here.... no sarcasm intended.
It's the giving that counts, yaknow. :-D
I have a better idea. Clinton can drop his pants, sell tickets, and donate the money to charity.
Bring this up for the Hillary run in 2008. Nobody likes tax increases especially when it is just because.
Typical politician/lawyer/beancounter response (no insult intended for anyone except politicians). In reality, all a politician can do to truly increase their part of an economic engine is to set the tax (read commission) rate that encourages optimism among consumers and investors (and nurtures economic growth).
Simply raising taxes is a false linear concept that doesn't do anything but suck more cash out of the economy without regard to the effect such an action may have on the engine that pays those taxes. I would say it is random in its effect, but consumers and investors interpret this kind of randomness as stupidity and their confidence is reduced accordingly.
Just roll back the tape to Ronald Reagan, insert Japanese for Chinese in above statement, and voila you have turned back time. We heard this a million times back then.
I'm against all of this unnecessary spending myself, but the sky is not anywhere close to falling.
I will give Clinton credit as a half-wit. He did recognize a problem and diagnose it. Obviously, raising taxes when the economic chickens are about to come home to roost is the roadmap to an economic catastophe. But at least the he is encouraging the Democrats to offer a plan for a problem. The Republicans have been spending like drunken sailors. Bush's coalition with Teddy Kennedy on No Left Child Behind has wasted billions on a place the federal government has no business being. The prescription drug plan is a black hole for federal money. Homeland security has wasted billions although I doubt if we will hear that from the Democrats or the Republicans. The Republican Congress looks alot like the Democratic Congress of 1994, very complacent with using the public's money to buy their offices, but eventually taxpayers will replace the devil they do know with the devil they don't know. Complacency is not healthy. A plan of action and action might save the day. But the Republicans look like they are bankrupt when it comes to ideas, and simply content to revert to throwing money at problems. Clinton wanting to raise taxes is truly Democratic liberalism. The Republicans are trying to invent liberalism LITE for a country that wants all the programs without paying the piper.
The "pump-head" syndrome is kicking in on old Bill!
bump
Well if it bothers you so much Bill, give the freaking money back.
LOL - yeah, and donate your (and your pretend-sife's) book royalties too!
