New York City's most famous gay penguin couple has split up.
Even worse, one of them has taken up with a female penguin new to the Central Park Zoo, the New York Post reports.
Silo and Roy, two male chinstrap penguins native to the South Atlantic, made local headlines six years ago when they came out with their same-sex relationship.
Since then, the pair have successfully hatched and raised an adopted chick after trying to incubate a rock and become role models for six other same-sex couples among penguins at the zoo.
That all ended when Scrappy, a single female newly arrived from SeaWorld in San Diego, caught Silo's eye.
"Silo and Roy stopped spending as much time together or building a nest," said John Rowden, curator of animals at the zoo.
Silo promptly moved in with Scrappy, building a new nest with her. Zookeepers were at a loss to explain Silo's sudden conversion.
"Why does anyone bond? Why do people want to get married and divorced?" said Dr. Dee Boersma, penguin expert at the University of Washington in Seattle. "Presumably, they've got their reasons."
Silo and his hot-feathered home-wrecker have yet to produce an egg, but they've been busy trying.
On Thursday, Roy, all alone, sat disconsolately at the edge of the penguin area, staring at the wall.
"If you got divorced, would you want to see your old mate around?" reasoned Boersma.
Besides, she added, "he's probably courting other penguins, getting ready for next season."

Hey, that's my team you're talking about! ;^)
So, even in nature, gay relationships are unstable, short-term, and not conducive to good family life ... Yup, Fox will be the only network to report this little tidbit of news.
For some...
Heck, I've seen the same sort of "homosexual" behavior between male dogs (I know a woman who breeds dogs). They hump each other whenever the fancy strikes them. I've even seen a "fixed" male continue to hump the furniture or whatever is handy, only he probably doesn't know why he's doing it anymore.
However, put a bitch in heat in the same room, and their behavior changes radically. I would surmise that the "gay penguin" thing was not a conscious choice (it would assume that animals have the intelligence to display consciousness)but more of a response to primal needs/urges being mitigated by the lack of available females.
I do not, however, mean to equate human homosexuality with animal urges. 'Nother can of worms altogether. I merely point out that this is not as unusual in the animal kingdom as this story makes out.
Scrappy is guilty of a hate crime for breaking up the homosexual relationship. She successfully heteronormalized Silo, who was happily engaged in the "gay" lifestyle.
(Are we done anthropomorphizing penguins yet?)
LOL. Sorry. I am a Blackhawks fan, and I have been saying wait till next year for 44 years now. The bums. Acutally, management is to blame.
No mention of the adoptive child's future. Custody battle? It's always the childrens [sic] that get hurt. sigh
I thought this was about Super Mario.
Sidney Crosby appears to be everything they said he was! Plus all the signings thanks to the strike and salary cap.
Bi curious?
Ah, maybe if you take off the "gay" colored glasses you'd realize that penguins have more sense than humans ... could it be they were just GOOD FRIENDS and just hadn't found the RIGHT ONE yet?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ?
I guess that's a step above male human queers who play with turds.
Remember, these gay penguins were behind bars, so until the sexy new lady showed up their choices were probably limited. Those female chinstraps are really hot, however.
EVEN WORSE, one of them has taken up with a female penguin
Talk about blatant pro-gay bias.
Bat Boy named as the reason.
No, actually they were having bitter arguments about the wallpaper pattern in their bedroom.
Does this mean she was never married or that she was a widow or divorcee? Or does this mean they sent only one female when at least two were needed?
