I regard this story as an absolutely wonderful tale. For Mr. Rubin, recognition delayed was not recognition denied. On the contrary. Now more people will see his courage and hopefully think of him as a role model.

Sounds like this fellow earned at least two Medals of Honor.

President Bush has called the 76-year-old Korean War veteran "one of the greatest Jewish soldiers America has ever known."
that's a weird comment.

This story is made to order for a movie. There are, however, several things that Hollywood might have trouble with.
First, the American soldiers who liberated Mauthausen would be shown as heroes. Can't have that. Then the American soldiers in Korea holding off hordes of Communists would be shown as heroes. Can't have that either. Then, in the scenes in the North Korean prison camp, the Communist guards would be correctly portrayed as brutal. Definitely can't have THAT. After all, Hollywood thinks that Communists are our friends and American soldiers are the bad guys.
So another good film will never get made.

Congressional Medal of HonorMisnomer, it's the Medal of Honor.
The specific authorizing ordinance is found in U.S. Code, Title 10, Subtitle B, Part II, Chapter 357, Section 3741:
"The President may award, and present in the name of Congress, a medal of honor of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to a person who while a member of the Army, distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty."
To: stylin19a
Not really - since his original recommendation for the Medal of Honor was sabotaged because he was Jewish.
His ethnicity is an important part of his story and why he received his medal so belatedly.

I read all that. and I can understand the context.
But here's Rubin's take on his some of his own actions: "I did it because I was an American,"
I still think President Bush's statement was weird.

What a great story, and so close to Rosh Hashanah. I'll have to bring a copy to services.
Just like our Prez to correct a great wrong like this. Of course our liberal "friends" will say it's the Neo-Cons (like me) who made it happen.

This story goes into so much more detail than the earlier one posted here. Mr. Rubin was amazing in his heroism and resourcefulness. He saved more than 40 fellow soldiers, if you take into account how he stayed behind so the rest of his unit could move out.

Can you imagine the scene of him staying behind, and running from foxhole to foxhole, lobbing grenades at the NK's? That takes nerve, and the ploy worked! I think Mel could be trusted to make a great movie of this story.
