You right, God expects the husband to love his wife as Christ loved the church, however, the order of authority that God put into place, First God, then the Son ( Jesus Christ ) then the husband ( in the family unit, as leader and authority in the household ) and then , as parents as husband and wife as both leaders and parents over the children.
It is God's plan that God placed the husband as the head and leader of a household, it's doesn't mean the wife is lesser than the husband ( IN CHRIST ) for they both are partners as equal as lovers and partners ( IN CHRIST ), but, the husband is the leader, figurehead and authority in the family.
