Two time survivor - holocaust and Korea.
Yeah. He survived the two industrial age terrors of the twentieth century, naziism and communism. He was lucky in the first case, in being Hungarian -- the extermination of the Hungarian Jews started late. But Eichmann still deported something like 900,000 of them, and at least a third went right from the train platform to death.
There are still some 8,000 MIAs from the Korean War. A large number of them were known to be taken alive. Communism is the deadliest thing ever invented by mankind.
I've met a bunch of MOH recipients, from a guy who should probably have had three of them (Bob Howard), to a guy who lived to wear the medal he was awarded posthumously in one of the Army's funniest cock-ups ever (Jon Cavaiani), to a guy who was quietly hustled out of the Army because they caught him with a bag of dope on an MOH speaking tour (I don't think he needs to be named). Every one of those guys did something for which the country OWES him.
