Radanovich Calls Sierra Club on Hypocrisy -
Environmental Fundraising Organization Seeks to Limit Public Access to Yosemite National Park
July 17, 2003
Washington, DC Congressman George Radanovich (R-Mariposa) today called on the Sierra Club to reverse their double standard on restoring Yosemite National Park.
The Sierra Club is putting their special interests ahead of the interests of the people that Yosemite National Park was created for, Radanovich said. The Sierra Club is given special access to the Valley while they try to limit the access of the public coming to enjoy the park.
Eric Wesselman, a California representative of the Sierra Club praised the Clinton Administrations Yosemite Valley Plan in a July 17 article in the Contra Costa Times, saying that the plan was designed to restore the park. That plan advocates the removal of 350 Valley campsites to return them to their natural state.
Radanovich introduced legislation on Tuesday, July 15, to restore the park and improve access for the public. As part of that effort, the bill calls for the removal of the LeConte Memorial Lodge, a structure in the Valley dedicated to a founding member of the Sierra Club and operated by that organization with a special use permit.
The Sierra Clubs hypocrisy is clear. Where campers once were, they want habitat restoration, all the while enjoying their own little piece of the park. If the Sierra Club is going to talk the talk, they must also walk the walk.
Radanovich explained his legislation to the Sierra Club and expressed his concerns about their double standard in a letter sent to the organization today.
