State reparations bill for Latinos advances

SACRAMENTO - Responding to a dark, little-known chapter in American history, the Assembly voted Tuesday to establish a state fund that could be used to pay reparations to survivors of a massive deportation of Latinos in the 1930s.

By a 41-23 vote, lawmakers approved a bill by Sen. Joe Dunn, D-Garden Grove, that also would create a 16-member commission to make recommendations to the governor and Legislature on how to redress the deportations.

It would take subsequent legislation to appropriate money for the fund, however.

The bill is a response to a policy that was started by the Hoover administration, supposedly in an attempt to remove illegal immigrants to open up jobs during the Depression.

But most of the 2 million people who were deported to Mexico were American citizens or legal immigrants, bill supporters say. They included about 400,000 Californians.

Some of the deportees eventually returned to the United States. Fewer than 5,000 of them now live in California, said Assemblywoman Cindy Montanez, D-Mission Hills.

``Now is the time for California to acknowledge this illegal program that stripped Americans of their basic civil rights,'' she said.

We gave the indians gambling... why don't we give the Mexicans the drug trade?

Just deduct it from what Mexico owes us for the services provided to it's citizens.

Reparations precedent. Bad news. If you have anything at all, your government is stumbling all over itself at warp speed to give it to someone else. Political/legal group cronyism determines who gets to hold the goods.

Very bad for property rights and long-term prosperity. Why work if you can't keep it?

California, legislatively, is a freaking mess!

These fools should dip into their own pockets if they liberalishly want to donate money to specific groups of people.

Yeah, citizens OR legal immigrants, 'cause there's really no difference between the two.  It's not like legal immigrants are here at our discretion or anything.  We owe them all the rights a citizen has.

GIVE THEM CALIFORNIA! ...and be done with it.

That's what I say too! Then put up a huge wall. There is no hope for saving California. It will be a third world country,

As opposed to illegal immigration I am I have to agree. If they were legal citizens they deserve to be treated as such. On the other hand it's possible to be here legally but not a citizen. In that case they deserve little if anything.

The Dems in California must be jealous of their brothers & sisters In Louisiana.

Schemers abound where Democrats are found.

Sing it, Mouseketeers!:
Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you. If you vote Dem-o-crat.

For it's hard you will find, to be using your mind. When you vote Dem-o-Crat.

You can go to extremes, With impossible schemes,
You can laugh when your dreams Fall apart at the seams . . .

And life gets more exciting, With each passing day,
An' cash is either in your hand, Or, on the way!

Don't you know that it's worth, Every treasure on earth,

To vote Dem-o-Crat!
