Right-wing after Death (favorable review of TV show "Medium"
The New York Post ^ | 9/17/05 | Julia Gorin

Posted on 09/17/2005 5:42:14 AM PDT by jocon307

RED[-state] Americans feeling under served by the entertainment industry have less to whine about these days....NBC's hit show "Medium" is giving them a ringing endorsement from the Other Side.

The show — which starts its second season tonight — is based on the cases of real-life medium Allison Dubois, who serves as a consultant to the series.

In a twist from the usual snickering at conservative characters and notions, the first episode had a defense attorney balking over the Texas Rangers questioning his molester-murderer client.

After the Rangers and their consultant (Dubois, played by Patricia Arquette) bulldoze past him, the lawyer calls after them futilely, "Don't make me call The New York Times!" This was a laugh line — and not only was the joke on a defense lawyer, it reduced the Paper of Record to a punch line.

As she explains in her book "Don't Kiss Them Good-bye," the real Allison Dubois had vowed to put away child abductors and molesters after being the victim of an attempted abduction herself as a child.

The pro-military, pro-gun wife and mother of three reports that when she is asked whether her being used in jury selection stacks the deck against the defense, she answers, "I hope so" (and snaps us out of our foggy coma of moral equivalence between victim and assailant).

This review has convinced me to try this show.

I really wish I could have posted the whole thing, especially since the Post's registration is particularly tiresome. (It wouldn't ever let me register until I clicked some boxes to agree to get junk emails. Luckily I haven't gotten too many.)

Gorin writes for Jewishworldreview.com, so maybe the full text can be found there. Here is a link to the print page, in case that might work:

Anyway, nice to see a show with a different angle, and always nice to see someone point out that the NY Times is a joke.

I'd just add "check your local listings" as in a part I left out she says the show runs on Monday nights, but if it's starting today, well, that's Sunday, so I'm not clear on that detail.

This is a great show, but I do think it's on Mondays.

I like the show. Patricia Arquette is an odd choice to play the lead, though. I saw the real woman in an interview once and she is very different.

www.bugmenot.com is a good place to get passwords.

www.mailinator.com is a good place to get temporary email accounts.

That's what Yahoo Mail, G-Mail, Hot Mail, etc... are for!

Create a "dummy" account as the depository for the junk mail that comes from registering.

I met Patricia Arquette briefly last year when I (almost literally) bumped into her at Costco in Culver City, Ca. She was very friendly and down to earth. Not what I expected at all!

"Not what I expected at all!"

LOL! And she shops at Costco, she does sound very down to earth.

I remember her as being good in the things I've seen her in, but I can't remember what any of those things were.

It is on Monday night at 9 p.m. CST. The season premiere is this Monday. I do love this show because the bad guys are bad and she wants to put them away.

As a Sci-Fi/Occult/X-Files-aholic I am drawn to these sort of shows, no matter how corny.

I've enjoyed this one. Most are heavily laden with too-clever plot twists and character developments that make them hopelessly hokey, but the main distraction of this one (an almost unhealthy fascination with marital woes between the main character, Allison, and her husband) is (to me) tolerable.

The premise of this particular show is that reluctant medium Allison uses her "gift" (her ability to see and speak with spirits) to solve crimes. Most of the writers/producers of these types of dramas usually can't resist the temptation to moralize (almost universally a liberal viewpoint).

An excellent example is the Law & Order franchise, who have become insufferable in their promotion of liberal causes.

I can see why anything to the right of, say Ruth Vader Ginsburg could be accused of being "Right-Wing After Death" ;'}

I love the show. Dubois and her husband have a unique marriage and a special, gentle way of dealing with their problems and those of their children.

Patricia doesn't reflect the trendy Desperate Housewife look. She's earthy, kind, considerate and usually ends up "apologizing" for something or another. Her husband is the glue that keeps them together, IMHO.

Throw in her unique ability to solve a crime and it's a show you can enjoy with the whole family.

Try it.

Patricia looks abit different these days. She stands just 5'2, and has added a few more 'healthy' pounds. But she's still quite lovely.

I best remember her in "Stigmata".

She was married to Nicolas Cage for 6 years..sigh.

Reminder - Season premiere on tonight
By the way - Patricia Arquette won an Emmy last night - and mentioned the troops in her acceptance speech. Not political - just said hope you come home safe.

I also have watched 'Medium' from the beginning of its first season, and do enjoy watching the show...and you are right...she knows who the bad guys are, ,and she wants to put them away...

I especially liked the episode, where the crime she was dreaming about, had not happened, it was a dream from the future...in the end, Allison had to confront the young gal, who was in her dream, and tell her, that someday, a guy, in such and such a car, will try to lure you, and say this and that to you, and I am warning you now, get away from this guy, he is a bad guy....

I know that that young lady, thought Allison was absolutely nuts...I am wondering if they will ever do a follow up to that particular story, and we get to see that young lady, get away from the bad guy, and realize that Allison knew what she was talking about...

Do you think that is her daughter in the future?...I am not sure I agree with you...didnt Allison know the girls name, and that is how she found her...or did she know her name?...your take on this, has a special spooky twist and I like it....
