Hijacked plane crashes in Auckland
18.09.05 10.02pm UPDATE
A light plane has crashed into the Waitemata harbour off St Heliers beach.
A local resident said she was watching the election coverage on TV when she heard "an unusual thud". Minutes later she heard a helicopter circling and then saw it shine its spotlight on to the water.
She saw the wing of a plane sticking out of the water about 20 metres from shore near the Kohimarama Yacht Club on Tamaki Drive.
At about 9.30pm, TV One reported that a light plane had been stolen from Ardmore Airport in South Auckland and had been flown dangerously low over Auckland.
The TV station reported that the pilot was in touch with police and had threatened to crash the plane into the Sky Tower.
Rescuers are attempting to get to the plane's pilot.
For now anyway
Checking on that now. That's a new one to me.
Thanks Keith.
Light palnes... sounds like I might need to do the usual things (stun the beeber, take a shower, etc.)
I can't pass this up;)

and have the sister-biting moose move your cheese... :)
And another FR Lexicon listing is born???
When that kid (who was an Osama fan) flew a light plane into a downtown Tampa building there was hardly any damage. I don't think a light plane can do much damage unless perhaps it was packed with explosives.
Still not noticed in the spots one would normally see this (Radio Australia, BBC, etc).
Well TVNZ is the OFFICIAL state run television, so one would
have to assume that if its on THEIR web site it must be for real. They would have it first.
Remember, Australia is 1200 nautical miles away, and they
are probably waiting for something official from NZ.
BBC? Well it has to pass the political correcteness department first now doesn't it!
Yep- the kid that they refused to report was part Syrian. Didn't want to bring up that little fact!
Keep us informed.
TVNZ site now says:
Police are trying to reach the pilot of an aircraft which has crashed into the sea of Kohimarama in east Auckland.
The pilot of the light plane had earlier threatened to crash the M.B.O. aircraft into the Sky Tower.
The plane was earlier reported stolen from Ardmore Airport in Manukau City
The police helicopter followed the plane after the pilot made unspecified threats.
The crash was close to National Party leader Don Brash's house at St Heliers. One unconfirmed report said the man had threatened to crash the plane into Brash's house.
There was no immediate word on how many people were aboard or if
they were injured.
The title and story is now updated in the thread.
I remember the pictures of that one. Didn't do much more than take out one office or so. The aircraft's tail was sticking out of a small hole in the side of the building. Some heads were poking out the hole looking at the tail.
New Zealand has no air force?
Last I heard they had an airforce with nothing but transport planes and rotary wing.. The current pm sold off virtually all all the aging fighter/bombers and declined the US offer of F16s leaving them with essentially zero defensive or offsensive capability.
This per posts here on FR. Searching their site I see not one photo of any offensive capable aircraft.
You need another peek at the map. Its 4750 miles away, thru Australian Air space.
