KENNER, La. - Merlene Maten undoubtedly stands out in the prison where she has been held since Hurricane Katrina. The 73-year-old church deaconess, never before in trouble with the law, now sleeps among hardened criminals. Her bail is a stiff $50,000. Her offense? Police say the grandmother from New Orleans took $63.50 in goods from a looted deli the day after Katrina struck.....

Well she could fight back. They have a hands off policy on men with guns.

I'm surprised they didn't drag her 80 year old husband off with her. I wonder what happened to him.

Dear Itzlzha,

Yeah, that's more of the story. I read one story where the family shows that to get into the store, as it had already been ransacked, required climbing through broken windows and over counter-tops, and such. The woman in question is diabetic, and isn't in very good conditions at 73 years old. It was quite unlikely that she could have picked and climbed her way through the store.

The police, apparently, couldn't make a common sense judgment that this particular woman was an unlikely looter, and were unwilling, apparently, to hear or see any evidence to the contrary that she was looting.

The case really highlights the complete corruption of the New Orleans Police Department, justice system, and overall government.

Sickening.

A very deli-cate case, this is.

She must have cased the joint beforehand.

I know what happened to him, because I clicked the link and read the story.

your analysis is lame
starvation doesn't set in in 1 day..& deli food doesn't keep in the open.

Read the article - it's a C Store & the owner doesn't want the gal charged.

a far different story.

"Also, make sure the JBT's NEVER are allowed to wear a badge, or carry a gun again! Again...we see the LEO's are more interested in the EASY colar, rather than exerting any effort to catch the REAL bad guys!"

Oooh....a cop hater. Never mind. About half of the folks here on FR were in favor of simply shooting all looters on sight. The other half were divided between letting people take food and jailing everyone who looted.

But you're special. You hate cops

I ask, do the NOPD represent all Law Enforcement? If so it seems like an awful wide net - condemnation by association.

Six lashes with a wet noodle for you!. Don't you know that reading the entire story is just not done?

Ooooh....a "Cops can't EVER do any wrong" jacka$$!

Gee, what are THESE cops doing...is THAT Law Enforcement? Do YOU do that Officer? How abouty bribes and Protection Payoffs...are they YOUR modus operandi? How about the "Professional Courtesy" that is routinely extended to Cops and their families for speeding tickets and DUI busts? Are THEY cool...maybe they are a perk for wearing the Uniform?

See, when LEO-Uber-Alles types IGNORE their Brothers and Sisters who a ARE THEMSELVES CRIMINALS, out of some misguided sense of loyalty or "CYA" mentality...you no longer SERVE the Public Good...you are self-serving THUGS no better than the criminals you supposedly protect US from!

But you're special. You hate cops.

Apparently, you are "special" too...you hate Citizens that get "uppity" and call the LEO's on their Criminal Activities!

Now that you have doen a MAGNIFICENT job making it about me...care to address the issues? We all SAW the cops looting, and allowing the THUGS to loot indiscriminately...yet they saw fit to bust a 73 year old woman who was not even INVOLVED in the crime...who has WITNESSES to that extent? Gee, was anyone that looted the Deli caught? Why not?

She had food, and PAID for a hotel room herself...why would she loot a deli when she was too old and frail to climb over the debris, counter, and broken glass?

And are the NOPD the shining example of Police that YOU live up to?

"I ask, do the NOPD represent all Law Enforcement? If so it seems like an awful wide net - condemnation by association."

Of course not, and most of the NOPD officers did their best to help during the flood. Even so, this woman was not even arrested by NOPD.

There are those here on FR who hate the police. Period. They will post on any thread that has to do with the police, and use terms like "jack-booted thugs (JBT)" to describe all law enforcement officers.

One must wonder why they hate the cops so much.

There are bad cops, of course. Most, however, are not bad cops, and are just doing their job as best they can.

The cop-haters on FR are my least favorite group here, as you can probably tell.

"Ooooh....a "Cops can't EVER do any wrong" jacka$$! "

Not at all, my friend. When a law enforcement officer breaks the law, he should be punished for that. Most LEOs do not break the law.

I simply do not call all cops JBTs for the actions of a few. You apparently do.

Thanks Mineral Man - I agree with all you wrote. "JBT" is a term most cop-haters use and it gives them away.

That's been my observation too. It makes me think that some of these cop haters have been on the wrong side of the law at some point and got caught. No way to prove that theory though what with the anonymnity of the internet.

So would I. In this case, I don't have a problem. Deli meat is not going to last anyway. How totally ridiculous. Even when I thought it was impossible, I get less and less impressed with Nagin. That's understatement.

And YOU apparently, by your earlier words, make the assumption that we/I HATE leo's...

Bzzzt WRONG!

I hate the COPRRUPT LEO's that the "honest" LEO's do NOTHING about due to the "Blue Brotherhood" crap!

See, if you caught your brother stealing a candy bar...would you tell mom & dad? Would you tell the store owner?

Or would you let him get away with it?

And again, you did NOT address my points after jumping all over me as a "hater"...wanna try again...address my issues point by point please. How about those "perks" I mentioned that LEO'S offer their own, as well as the "privileged protected class"...aka politicians?

Let's see where YOU come down.

OH, and btw...the MAJORITY of NOPD didn't do the best they could...1/3 didn't SHOW UP...and there were a LARGE number that PARTTICIPATED in the looting...a far LARGER number than should EVER have been equipped with a badge and a gun. The NOPD is WELL known as the MOST CORRUPT LEO'S in the Country...yet you JUMP to their defense...why?

Are the NOPD an "aberration"...or are the "indicative" of LEO'S all over?
