Actually, the coastal waters in NY and NJ are around 72 degrees, but if you go about 200 nm offshore that gulf current runs about 8-10 degrees warmer. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/ <-- Bouy stations up and down the coast. Check out 44025, 44009, and 44004.

places in the Hamptons are selling for 20 million, a few sold for 50 million.

but if this happened, the federal gov't would not rebuild long island.

long island cannot be evacuated - there isn't even a plan for it. the plan is for all people north of sunrise highway to evacuate in place - in their homes. everyone south of sunrise hwy evacuates north - staying with friends, the nassau coliseum holds 25000, schools, etc. the plan also calls for people to drive to the shopping malls, park in the concrete parking structures, and ride it out there.

You would be pleasantly surprised my southron friend. Folks were worried about looting during the blackout recently and nothing happened. At least not on Long Island and despite my loud, vocal disagreements with the local black muslims, made sure I was okay by myself in the health food store. Besides most law abiding males I live around own guns.

Like that's a bad thing.

I recall back in the 60's, that many of these homes were built on flimsy wooden stilts over sand dunes. Is that still true today?

Long Island politicians and citizens should re-think their opposition to bridges connecting their area with Connecticut or the New York mainland. The only road and rail exits from Long Island run through New York City. In case of a powerful hurricane, the residents of the island would have to compete with eight million New York City residents clogging the highways, bridges, and rail lines in an evacuation. In terms of transportation, Long Island is in far worse shape than the New Orleans area, which at least had Interstates 10 and 55, along with the Lake Pontchartrain causeway, as means of evacuation.

Another BIG difference between NYC and NO is the quality of the police force.

Even before Katrina, the New Orleans Police Department was world-famous for corruption and incompetence.

The NYPD is probably the finest municipal police force in the world. When 911 hit, they ran towards the disaster, not away from it.

If there's looting after a hurricane in NYC, it won't be tolerated for very long.

And the 42ID of the NYNG has been front line domestically and in Iraq. In any event I can guarantee that my block would be safe as church.

I'm not familiar with Reverend Bennett or Tyler, Texas. Can you please enlighten me?

As I wrote earlier LI east of the split would only have to evacuate from south of Sunrise Highway. Barrier islands, the Great South Bay then three to five miles from the bay to Sunrise. That's enough to be safe. As for the North Shore, except for the actual harbor areas of Manhasset, Roslyn, Port Washington, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay....on out to Mount Sinai, the whole coast is elevated from a maximum of a half-mile inward. I wouldn't budge and would worry only about the wind.

He's the baptist bozo who posted the sign that stated "New Orleans is Sodom & Gamorrah" in the path of the displaced refugees.
