Mobile phone rapist jailed for 14 years

A "sadistic" rapist who used his mobile phone to film an attack on a young woman was jailed for 14 years today.

Jon Leaver, 23, from Lancashire, recorded the rape to send the images to his friends. But he was unaware that he was being filmed himself on CCTV.

During the attack he punched his 19-year-old victim so hard that he broke her jaw in two places, as well as breaking two of her fingers.

Leaver, who has a large tattoo on his stomach featuring the disfigured face of a woman, was convicted at Liverpool Crown Court of rape and causing grievous bodily harm after the jury watched the attack on CCTV.

Sentencing him, Judge David Boulton described the attack as "grave, horrendous and abhorrent".

He added: "The tattoo which you carry is disturbing and shows, in your adoption of the attitude towards that tattoo, a contempt for women and I consider that you are extremely dangerous to women.

"The violence you used was extreme to the point of being sadistic and I wonder when I see the tattoo and I see what you did to that woman’s face whether you were attempting to obliterate a face."

The rape happened on February 19 after Leaver and his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, met during a night out at Barbarellas nightclub in Leigh, Greater Manchester.

The pair kissed inside the club before leaving to get taxis home at about 1.50am. Leaver walked the woman to a deserted bus station where he pushed her against a wall and recorded himself with his mobile phone performing a sex act on her.

She begged him to stop but Leaver grabbed her by the throat and held her down by her hair before throwing her to the ground, the court heard.

When she refused to perform a sex act on him he struck her in the face so hard that she was knocked unconscious. After he was disturbed by a passer-by he carried her to another back street where he punched his victim in the face again.

Disturbed for a second time, he ran away and left behind the unconscious woman, who was helped by a member of the public.

Leaver’s relatives wept in the back of court as he was sentenced.

Detective Constable Pete Morris, of Greater Manchester Police, described Leaver, from Mayfield Street, Atherton, as a danger to women.

He said: "Today’s sentencing result clearly illustrates the seriousness of these crimes. After befriending the woman in the nightclub, Leaver brutally raped her, leaving her in the street with horrific injuries.

"He is evidently a danger to women and we are pleased that the sentence reflects the gravity of the offences. The victim has been scarred for life at the hands of Leaver and I only hope that today’s sentence will help her to move on and rebuild her life."

In a statement, Leaver’s teenage victim said she was frightened to leave her house as a result of the attack. She said: "This has totally changed my life and I still have fears about stepping outside the house on my own. I’m trying the best I can to get on with my life, but it is difficult and obviously I have a constant reminder with the injuries I have suffered.

"I hope people can look at this case and see that the right result can be found, and people shouldn’t be afraid to come forward. No means no, and no one should go through what I did."

Well he chose to brutalize an innocent, helpless young woman. Let's see how brave he is now.
