Not the most wonderful fellow ever, but say what you will about him he realizes EXACTLY what he is dealing with in Chechnya and shows those scum no mercy. We should have delt with Cuba the same way. He is no dummy; anyone who can become a judo champion AFTER having a stroke is not someone to mess around with. Of course I think we should have let the Serbs clean up the Balkans, too so take what I say with a grain of salt:-)
Why everyone expected Russians to stop being Russians (that is to say ethnocentric, imperialistic, heavily armed dangerous bastiges) once they gave up SOME of the tenents of Marxism-Leninism (actually Stalinism) is beyond me. Putin is just as convinced that he should be the head of the world's sole superpower as any American president past or present. Anyone- Chinese, American or Muslim who forgets that is making a big and deadly mistake.
Every dead Chechenyan terrorist is one less likley to stir up crap in Iraq or over here.

Fortunately I think we'll be getting a lot closer to Russia in coming years.

1) The rich and powerful will always protect the rich and powerful more to the point
2) the corrupt and incompetent shall always be allies with the with the corrupt and incompetent.
Thus it is no surprise to find Putin in lockstep with the UN

You are correct. I will take Russia as a serious ally when I see them pressure Iran to disengage in their nuclear program or face sanctions. Until then, I see them as aiding our #1 foe. Iran today told the world at the UN, that they will pass nuclear secrets on to other middle eastern countries. As they begin nuclear proliferation, it's a matter of a few scant years before we see one of our major cities being disintegrated and the beginning of the end of America as we know it.

While I agree with Putin's stance in Chechnya and Kosovo and a few others, this is plain stupid. Now a coalition council of the US/Britain/Russia/India, etc would make sense, but the UN is a racket scheme and not much more and is run by a lot of the very guys who should be having sniper sites on their foreheads. Crap, Sudan sits on the Human Rights committee, for God's sake.

Of course, on the flip side, by taking this to the incompetant UN, they'll be locked up in debate for decades, thus leaving those who are doing something to do something. Furthermore, it keeps the terrorist protectors like the EU from farting in anyone's direction.

Your map is off a bit, Ethiopia and Kenya are not Islamic, neither is Georgia or Armenia or the Phillipines or Cyprus, further Bangladesh is.

I have a hard time imagining that Putin is doing anything 'stupid'.
Devious, yes; underhanded, of course; something that will weaken us or another country (or countries) relative to Russia,- hell yeah. Stupid, no. When the Russkies play chess they often make moves that look odd until 20 or 30 moves later. Look at the guy- he'd sell (er, 'lose') a nuke to the right group if he knew it would be detonated somewhere/when in the interests of Russia.
IMHO he's playing the UN angle to murk things up, no way is he naive enough to think that they are actually going to do anything about the problem at hand.
