CA: Schwarzenegger All but Vows to Run
LA Times ^ | 9/15/05 | Robert Salladay

CLOVIS, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger all but declared Wednesday that he would run for a second term next year, saying, "I am not in this for the short run," and promising an official announcement Friday in San Diego.

Speaking at a special election campaign event in this Central Valley town near Fresno, Schwarzenegger was asked by an audience member if Californians would get "a chance to vote for you again." It was the last question during a carefully planned "town hall" meeting at a window factory.

The governor paused, smiled briefly and then revealed what he had been hinting for weeks: "I'm going to make an official announcement on Friday, this Friday. I believe very strongly in follow-through. Follow-through is the most important thing. If you start something you've got to finish it."

--snip--

The announcement would come on the eve of the governor's appearance at the California Republican Party convention Saturday in Orange County, where he is scheduled to give a luncheon speech.

The state party, in a rare early move, endorsed Schwarzenegger for reelection at its last convention in February.

The governor, who unveiled a large agenda in a confrontational speech before the Legislature in January, has seen his popularity among Californians decline in recent months. Some of the proposals he made — including a plan to overhaul the state pension system — fell flat.

He has been left with three initiatives ...

--snip--

All three measures have failed to get a majority of support from those surveyed in initial polls.

For the most part, Schwarzenegger has been subject to a barrage of negative television ads placed by public employee unions, scores of media stories about his inability to follow through on major policy plans and his large fundraising efforts.

This is good news. I was worried he'd base his decision on the special election results.

I don't know, does he know the language?

I have some problems voting for him again.

"The state party, in a rare early move, endorsed Schwarzenegger for reelection at its last convention in February."

Strangely pre-empting the possibility of any Republican Party Primary Challenge to Schwartzenegger that he of course could not win against a conservative challenger!

So now, if he were to decide not to run afterall, would leave the Republican Party without any candidate in the Primary whatsoever, unless a hapless write-in should try to salvage such a position.

Those conservative Republicans that finally earned a controlling interest in the CRP and wrote the Party Platform have been virtually thrown over the side in one of the strangest manipulations ever seen in CRP history!!!

Norm, have you been rocking the boat on your cruise???

Another 4 years of borrowing and spending will "finish it" for sure.

Well the only reason A.S. has ever come up here wasn't to taste the best wines in the state, but rather is the same reason Pete Wilson could only think of... to go whitewater rafting so GANG-GREEN could get him and Maria in an edie pool and have their way with his shallow moderate mind!!!

There is no way he could have won a primary, anymore than Reardon was able to and A.S. knew it! The delegates should not have forclosed the needed Primary Election test and shouldn't have been rolled by "the new majority," so-called!!!

At least that's what I think about it, FWIW...

Well, I'm sorry, but that's what happened to both those piss-poor Repellican Governors!!!

Well, tiger, I hope somebody down there lights yer stogie and gets you all fired up to think through what the herd is doing so maybe you can chart your own course and provide some persuasive leadership of your own on behalf of considerate conservatism in the Party.

I want to re-involve myself, but I'm not going to do it when the moderate manipulators just keep working against the proper use of the democratic process within the party! It just gets too embarrassing for me, frankly.

I was afraid he'd wait for the election results too. I'm with him if he's running again.

I won't jump ship to the next braindead puppet "conservative savior" the party bosses and money bags feed us.

Not much voting in this session. I'll be learning campaign contribution regulations and treasury reporting requirements. Pretty dry stuff.

I'll be ready for a good stiff drink by the end of Saturday!

Waspman, if you keep making such depressing pings, I'm going to have to add investment in the companies that make St. John's Wort to my portfolio.
