U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) takes a picture of the proceedings of the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings for Chief Justice nominee John Roberts on Capitol Hill in Washington September 14 , 2005. U.S. Chief Justice nominee John Roberts said on Wednesday that if confirmed by the Senate he would seek consensus on the often bitterly divided Supreme Court and clear rulings to help guide lower courts. Court TV saying two more hours of inquisitions by 6 RATS this morning. Scheduled to finish at 11 AM but watch the RATS ask for more time. Leahy up now.

The Galloway/Hitchens Debate

I listened to that last night. One of Hitchens' funniest lines was to say the GW had previously been the Governor of the provincial State of Texas. LOL. Provincial! Hitchens sounded sane, Galloway did not.

The ease with which he makes his arguments is astounding. His knowledge of the law, and the calm way he makes his case, makes the Senators seem so puny. LOL.

He is the calmest, most concise, most gracious, most intelligent man I have ever seen in 58 years on this earth.

Sometimes when I look into his quiet blue eyes as he calmly and rationally explains answers to the morons on the left, I almost feel like I'm looking at a being from another world. He is THAT different from most men. And, the love and admiration on his wife's face is constantly there for all to easily observe.

It's really is so stupid of them. And he never falls into their trap. Of course I have no training in the law, so much of what Roberts says is very arcane to me, yet he always brings it back to a central point I can understand. It's just a pleasure to see someone display such a fine intellect. And no notes! For hours and hours. It's a thing of beauty.

His handling of Schumer was a thing of beauty. The funny comeback with the named movies was the appetizer. The real zinger was what Roberts said next:

"And the great danger, of course, that I believe every one of the justices has been vigilant to safeguard against is turning this into a bargaining process.

It is not a process under which senators get to say, "I want you to rule this way, this way and this way. And if you tell me you'll rule this way, this way and this way, I'll vote for you."

That's not a bargaining process.

Judges are not politicians. They cannot promise to do certain things in exchange for votes.

And if you go back and look at the transcripts, Senator, I would just respectfully disagree. I think I have been more forthcoming than any of the other nominees. Other nominees have not been willing to tell you whether they thought Marbury v. Madison was correctly decided. They took a very strict approach. "

Roberts immediately turned the table on Schumer. Unfortunately I doubt the MSM caught the filleting of Schumer

Don't know about you, it made me proud.

Roberts attempting to tell him simply the language was wrong.

Agreed. And add to that that we are used to the Chief Justice being a much older, grandfatherly figure. This is a young man in comparision, so he's got youthful energy. Which makes him even more compelling. It must really gnaw at the Dems that he'll lead the court for many, many years to come. What a lucky break for our side...

Amen ............. I just pray that his supreme ability to explain his positions and reactions are equal to his high level of conservatism in his decisions on the court.

I'm nearly sure they will be!

Can you photoshop him into the space in the levee? That wouldn't require a wider behind... of course.

Oh, and it's missing the Oldsmobile.

AV I tend to agree with you. This is far from over and the stalling has just begun.

Bush's poll numbers give the Democrats on this commitee a warm and fuzzy feeling and they therefore think they can play this nominee like a cat would play a mouse.

It will come back to bite them in the butt, but they feel emboldened at the moment and will drag this out for many, many more days.

calling Roberts a stealth liberal is somewhat naive. He willingly and clearly applied the title "strict constructionist" to himself in the hearings two days ago. Tell me ONE liberal who would call himself a "strict constructionist?"
