I remember reading about the self-important Shirley MacLaine (she was a reincarnated ruler of lost Earth, you know) attending a late 1970s White House dinner thrown by Mr. Carter for the visting Chinese leaders, who had insisted that Richard Nixon be placed at the top of the guest list. She publicly howled about Nixon being invited to her dinner and how he didn't belong there; when she went through the line, the Chinese premier stated that was bewildered as to who the woman was and couldn't figure out what she was doing there.
