Don't know about the survival rate of the imprisoned Indians but doubt it was high.
That use of the prison at The Fort was another regrettable black mark on our nation's history, in my opinion.
I always felt the Native American Indians were tragic victims of our voracious appetite for land and growth.
We achieved "Euro West" - wide open spaces and waving fields of grain, steadily erasing one of their important food sources, buffalo herds; and coralling/slaughtering the tribes in our path who had long owned and roamed the lands.
The "we were only retaliating for the murder of our settlers" does not fly - the first scalp, it is said, was lifted by a white man, and they of course struck back; even if not so, they defended THEIR lands for all the right reasons.
WE were the interlopers and steadily encroaching and invading conquerors - not the Indians.
The Indians in New England welcomed the Pigrims and helped them - Manhattan was sold to them...fine.
But what about the "from sea to shining sea?" part that we justify?
While we love and enjoy the outcome, it came at a terrible cost to others; and we often still relagate them to Fourth Class Citizens status...
[Disclaimer - I do not have any Native American blood - just a passion for right and justice]
