In a strong voice that sometimes shook with grief, deer hunter Lauren Hesebeck described today the harrowing moments last November when Chai Soua Vang shot him from almost point-blank range, and how he watched friends die on the forest floor in northern Wisconsin.
Hesebeck was called to the stand this morning in the third day of the trial of Vang, 36, of St. Paul, in connection with the deaths of six fellow deer hunters. Vang watched impassively as Hesebeck described the shootings, which happened after Hesebeck's group promised to report Vang for trespassing.
Hesebeck said he was at the hunting cabin with others when he heard Terry Willers, who co-owned the land with Robert Crotteau, come on a 2-way radio and say that he had asked a trespasser to leave one of their tree stands.

Some new stuff since this AM.
If you don't want to slog through both pages, just skip ahead to the last paragraph on page 2.
;-)
It just makes me shiver to read this. Thanks for putting it up here for the evening crowd to read.
2nd degree murder, I think. Might be different findings for the different people. After he shot the guy with the rifle, even if he felt threatened, he was just picking them off.
Vang's evil shyster is playing the race card. Not sure haw moronic the jury is or whether they will buy this cr*p.
Would someone please explain to me how the known LIBERAL Attorney General of the State of Wisconsin (correct me if I'm wrong) can cherry-pick a "jury" from the Berkley of the midwest, Dane County (the place where I was born/raised) to "prosecute" this murdering punk?
Interesting how the only one to survive was the one who managed to get a hold of a rifle, even while wounded, and fire back.
Peg will either come out of this smelling like a rose, or collecting umemployment.
"Peg will either come out of this smelling like a rose, or collecting umemployment."
If the "perp" in this case "walks"......may Peg's soul rot in hell.
If he is convicted, may he experience the same fate as Jeffery Dahmer. He most certainly deserves it.
This whole affair disgusts me. Vang needs the death penalty. Yeah, I know there isn't one in Wisconsin
"This whole affair disgusts me. Vang needs the death penalty. Yeah, I know there isn't one in Wisconsin"
We do here in TEXAS. We KNOW how to "rehab" society's scum.
I'm very big on recycling when it comes to mass murderers and this scumbag is a mass murderer who is only here due to our misguided policy of allowing Hmong refugees in here wholesale. Those pint size primitives who suck up social services.
Put the "blame" where it belongs....on those socialist/"pc"/liberal knobs that keep being put into positions of power up there.
I'm a Wisconsin native that moved to TEXAS rather than deal with that crap.
Sorry.
It certainly does appear Vang left immediately when he was told to but one hothead did everything in his power to stop him and verbally abuse him. This is something that never would have happened if it wasn't for one hot head.
Vang was the hothead, the murdering sonuvabeetch.
This is something that never would've happened if Vang hadn't trespassed onto private property into a deer stand that didn't grow out of a tree but was put there by the owner.
This is something that never would've happened if Vang, after being caught, showed respect for the landowners, apologized, took his ammo out of his rifle, and walked away in peace.
Remember, Vang took his scope off as he was walking away. He did that so he'd be able to shoot to kill the so-called verbal abusers. He also reloaded his rifle to kill more of the unarmed hunters.
Sheesh.
"Interesting how the only one to survive..."
He was not the only one to survive, one of the people who got shot survived also.
I think the "you're not dead yet" testimony is going to damn this guy.
Six consecutive life terms, plus the additional time to serve for the two attempted murders out to ensure he comes out feet first.
Willers' testimony doesn't ring true to me. Why would anybody in their right mind try to stop an armed trespasser from leaving? Why did Willers pull out his gun while Vang was walking away from him, before Vang ever pointed a gun at anyone?
This is pure speculation, but my guess is that one of the other hunters (most likely Willers) tried to shoot Vang in the back as he was walking away- and had the extreme bad fortune to miss.
I have the sick feeling that Vang was doomed as soon as he entered that private land. He was either going to die in an "accidental" shooting, or spend the rest of his life in jail.
Exactly what happened next is hard to say from the conflicting testimony, but from what I've read so far I would have trouble convicting Vang of anything more than manslaughter. Vang was outnumbered, and at least one of them was armed. If I were in his shoes, I'd definitely have felt my life was in danger.
BTW, I hunt, and have my share of armed trespassers on my 50 acres.
What's the definition of second-degree? Why that? Shoot less than 10, it's only 2nd degree?
As I said, on last night's thread, the Wi. hunting party did everything wrong. Did they deserve to die? I don't really think so.
Yep, they should have retreated when they saw someone breaking the law on their property. Get clear. Make a call to the authorities. Let the LEOs/DNR do their job.
I was part of a group that turned in a pair of poachers some years ago. We left the scene quietly, said nothing, reached our vehicles and dropped a dime on them.
Justice was done, peacefully.
That being said, everybody reacts differently in these types of situations. And hindsight is definitely 20-20 in this case.
Good people died and we may never know the entire truth, but I will guarantee you one thing. People will treat each other a lot differently this year in the woods.
