Slaughter Pushing Gasoline Allocation (Price Caps)

ROCHESTER, NY Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-Rochester) today unveiled a plan that she says will help stabalize gas prices in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

In the last couple of weeks gas prices have increased dramatically, but Slaughter says that doesn't necessarily have to happen.

Slaughter has introduced the "Emergency Petroleum Allocation Act." It would temporarily cap the price of gas at 2-dollars 50-cents a gallon. It would also direct the Secretary of Energy to develop criteria for declaring the sort of national fuel emergency that would trigger future price controls.

Slaughter says if her plan garners enough support there could be a cap on the price of gas by the end of the year.

never.

It's against their nature to learn from the past. Most are immature and reactionary, all feeling and no thought. It's as if we have millions of children running around in adult bodies.

I remember the gas lines in 1973, every other day, depending on odd and even tag numbers, etc., etc.

Sure, price controls work GREAT.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

What's sadder is knowing that there will be "conservatives" here agreeing that we need the gas caps.

They may be socially conservative, but when it comes to economics, they're as left as Mao or Stalin.

Its called the Jimmah Cahtah 80-20 Plan. There's an eighty percent chance you'll get 20 percent of what you need.

The genius of price-fixing Dimbulbs never ceases to amaze; but that genius is like the false self-confidence of a drunk driver.

Gas will probably be lower than $2.50 by the end of the year - all due to market forces...

I don't think it's so much of people being "left" when it comes to economics as it is people being disgustingly selfish - they simply see it as a way for them to personally spend less money on gas and put the screws to the "greedy oil companies."

No it wouldn't.

What's the price of a gallon you can't buy?

Price controls create shortages and black markets.
They also encourage theft, and destroy incentive
for suppliers to add more capacity.

It would temporarily cap the price of gas at 2-dollars 50-cents a gallon.

Why $2.50? Why not $2.25 or $2.00 or $1.50? Heck, why should we have to pay for gas? The eeevil oil companies have made so much money that they don't need to make any more. Right?/sarcasm

That would be funny though if she got them to lock the price in at 2.50 and fuel dropped considerably under that.

Gas prices are dropping in some areas near me. I got gas yesterday for 2.97 and my mom said she say gas for 2.80!

Of course she would take credit for gasoline dropping even further than $2.50
