Hunter describes wounding:I felt the ripple through my body (Wisconsin murder trial day 2 wrap)
StarTribune ^ | 9/12/05 | Larry Oakes

In a hushed and transfixed courtroom, Terry Willers described late this morning feeling the impact of Chai Vang's bullet as it hit him.

''In a split second, I felt a burn and felt the ripple through my body,'' said Willers, who was one of two people who survived a confrontation in the north woods of Wisconsin that left six other hunters dead. ''I went to think about moving, and I couldn't move ... the only thing I could think of was that I couldn't help anybody, so I yelled that I'd been hit.

''I felt faint and heard some ringing in my ears and I was thinking 'This was it,' as I heard more shots ringing out.''

He had been shot in the neck, and the bullet had passed through his body and out his back at the shoulder.

You are more than welcome.

I am a deer hunter, also. I hunt Minnesota every year. I have hunted Wisconsin 4 or 5 times.

Have you ever turned in a poacher/trespasser?

I, along with my party, reported two poachers, about 10 years ago. Long story. Maybe some other day.

My point is, to all of you hunters out there, these guys did everything wrong.

Never, ever confront someone that has no problem breaking the law while carrying a firearm.

When you observe unlawful activity and you are NOT IN IMMEDIATE DANGER, fall back, report the illegal activity to authorities and let them remedy the situation.

When my party decided to bust the two poachers we encountered, we walked away to our vehicles, made the call and stood back.

My take, feel free to flame.

"Any racial or obscene posts will be removed, if possible"

What the hell does RACE have to do with this? The only factor that comes into play may be CULTURE not race. But this guy has been here long enough to know the rules!

I never argue or intimidate any one I don't know well who has a gun. I never show a gun unless I am planning to use it.

ButThreeLeftsDo,

Hang his ass.

He is a poacher, a blight on the upstanding hunters who have brought threatened species back from near extinction.

And he started hunting humans. He needs to be put away -- or shot and killed -- which would be my choice.

There have been some VERY racial posts on previous threads.

I won't be a party to that.

That's all I was saying.

I think shooting a deer (or anything) on another person's property would also be considered poaching license or not. Trespassing, of course, can be done without hunting. I might be wrong, but I think that's how that charge comes into it. Not that it really matters. On another note, this is the first I've heard that Vang may have murdered other hunters in the past. Very interesting, serial killer perhaps?

Watching the local news on Saturday night (KMSP 9), I listened as the reporter assigned to cover the story described film footage from day 1 of the trial.

As one of Peg's assistants walked from the back of the courtroom to the front with the alleged murder weapon (7.62mm SKS, common knowledge since the shootings) the reporter referred to the weapon as a "shotgun".

This reinforced my long-held claim that people who report news usually have no idea what they are talking about and the majority of their viewers/listeners accept what they report.

As a person who lives near the community where this has occured I am speechless to those who may bring race into this.

Do you not think the criminal defense attorneys will decline to bring race into it?

The problem with the StarTribune, is they do updates, but don't change their URL during the day. You can follow the daily thread and click on the first link of the day all day long and get updates.

This, from tonight's last update, is pretty tough.

"In other testimony Monday, David Drew, who had stayed at the cabin, described some of the last words he had with his younger brother, Dennis, who was fatally wounded.

"He said, 'You might as well take my shoes off because they're going to cut them off otherwise,' " David Drew testified, his voice breaking slightly as he recounted their conversation in his pickup as they rushed to meet an ambulance.

He testified that when he tried to reassure his brother that he'd recover, the man replied: "It's gonna be a tough one. It's gonna be tough."

Was there ever any decision as to if this guy was connected the the killing of a hunter in Michigan a few years back?

I think you're referring to a killing in northern Adams Co (Wi), if so, there's been no linkage, or leads.

In Wisconsin, it's not poaching, it's trespass. As is retreiving a downed animal without permission, though the DNR will help you with that.

Call the sheriff, NOT the DNR.

What the hell does RACE have to do with this?

IIRC (and my memory may be wrong since I have not followed this story closely) when he was arrested him claimed it was a racial issue - ie, they called him racial names so he shot them. This was followed by some people in the media assuming this allegation was true, and therefore another example of.....well, you can guess. Expect the usual suspects to play the race card early and often. So, yes, race actually does have something to do with this - maybe it should not, but let's not kid ourselves that the defense won't play the race card if they think it will help them.

Hehe! No kidding, it's only a matter of time before PETA starts doing that. After all, the poor animals are more important than us human beings (sarcasm)
